Dolly the Trolley invites riders to “Doo the Loop” and visit all of
Downtown Wildwood through September 2

Wildwoods icon, Dolly The Trolley continues to roll around the Wildwoods – and gain popularity – thanks to the Wildwood Business Improvement District (WBID).

The FREE trolley service, known for its red lips & mouth and eyelashes above the headlights, provides transportation throughout Downtown Wildwood for vacationers and locals in the five-mile island during summer.

“We’ve experience record-breaking ridership during the last three years, and we hope to top those numbers this year,” said John Donio, President of the Wildwood BID.

Dolly the Trolley provides FREE summertime transportation throughout the Wildwoods’ downtown district, located between Cresse Avenue and 26th Avenue along Atlantic and Pacific Avenues. Pick-up locations can be found throughout Downtown Wildwood at clearly marked “Dolly” stops.

Dolly the Trolley runs Thursday-Sunday from 5-11 p.m. during the summer through Sunday, September 2.

“People love riding the trolley – whether it’s to get to town for dinner or to go to their favorite ice cream shop,” said Donio. “Dolly’s a great way to get to your favorite spot in the Wildwoods while checking out everything else Downtown Wildwood has to offer.”

Additional ticket packages and information are available by visiting www.wildwoodconcerts.com.

The Wild 100 Concert will include performances by:

Hot Chelle Rae

Before Hot Chelle Rae “fueled up the Jeep with bubbly elasti-funk and breezy hip-hop swagger” (as Entertainment Weekly put it) with their brand new single “I Like It Like That,” the Nashville-based quartet scored a bona fide breakthrough smash hit over the last several months with “Tonight Tonight.” Declared “one of the catchiest pop-rock anthems of the summer” by USA Today, “Tonight Tonight” crashed into the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, shot to No. 1 at Hot AC radio and was certified double-platinum in the U.S.

Austin Mahone

At just 16 years of age, singer/songwriter Austin Mahone is poised for stardom. Already making his mark on the scene, Mahone scored a hit on iTunes with his first original single, “11:11.” Not only does he have a solid fan base, known as “Mahomies,” but the teen sensation is gaining a legion of loyal fans in the media as well. He’s hot on the press trail stopping by high profile magazines such as Popstar!, which has featured him on their cover, as well as J-14, M, Astro Girl, Quiz Fest and Twist.

The Ready Set

The Ready Set’s debut album I’m Alive, I’m Dreaming was released in June 2010 and debuted at No. 3 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart. The JR Rotem-produced “Love Like Woe” made a splash on radio and sales charts across the country, hitting #15 on the Mainstream Top 40 airplay chart, #27 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, and #18 on the Digital Songs Chart. The track has been certified platinum by the R.I.A.A.

Forever the Sickest Kids

On tour in the U.S. for the first time in 2012, pop-rock quartet Forever the Sickest Kids (FTSK) will be hitting some of their favorite cities in the Midwest and East Coast in July and August. In 2011, FTSK toured with Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, All-Time Low, Breathe Carolina, The Cab and more. The band spent time overseas playing shows in the UK as well as Japan and Australia earlier this year. The band is also busy writing and recording new songs.

Rebecca Black

Millions of people know Rebecca Black as the 14-year-old girl whose catchy first song "Friday" stuck in their heads. What they don't know about this teenager from Anaheim Hills, CA is that she has been performing since she was a toddler and is dedicated to a career in music. She recorded “Friday” and filmed a video to accompany the song, thinking only her family and close friends would see and hear it. The video went viral on YouTube within a month. Within a few short weeks, artists such as Nick and Joe Jonas Tweeted the lyrics and performed "Friday" in concert, as did Justin Bieber. Lady Gaga told a group at Google headquarters, "Rebecca Black is genius."  Rebecca released her second single “My Moment” and within the first 36 hours it had over six million views on YouTube.  She has since released her third single, “Person of Interest” and even performed her hit song “Friday” on stage with Katy Perry at Katy’s sold-out concert in Los Angeles.

Outasight

Every so often a new artist comes along with a sound so innovative; he is able to help reshape the barriers that confine mainstream music. Meet Outasight, the Yonkers, NY bred musician who weaves together the cadenced sounds of popular hip-hop and indie rock with the poignant sensibility of classic pop and soul music to create a fresh, new sound that is all his own. Now with Warner Bros. Records, Outasight is getting ready to release his debut full length album in 2012.

Action Item

2012 is going to be their year. After releasing The Stronger the Love in 2010, these five boys from New Jersey are on track to be stars. Past tours with acts like Hot Chelle Rae, We The Kings, Allstar Weekend, Honor Society and more have made Action Item one of the most buzzed acts of this past year. Not to mention three singles on Radio Disney, the most recent being "Learn To Fly," which was produced by Nick Jonas.

Kicking Daisies

Teen rockers Kicking Daisies blend pop, rock and a whole lot of energy with stunning musical skills to sell out venues around the country and open for some of the biggest names in pop and indie rock. With breakout successes ranging from winning Disney's Next Big Thing Contest and a Billboard charting single, the gifted members of Kicking Daisies are setting their sights on stardom.

Teen "Black Light Foam Party" set for June 23rd at Splash Zone

Lets face it, teens are often caught at that "in between" age when it comes to having fun at the shore.

Remember the days when you were too young to do "grown up" things, but too old to even want to think about spending an evening with the family (and possibly having to mind your younger siblings)?

There was a time when rock n' roll record hops and dance parties at famous Boardwalk venues like the Starlight Ballroom were all the rage. Nowadays, there aren't as many options for the 14-19 demographic.

Northeast PA-based Sound Party and Splash Zone Water Park are looking to change that. The two companies are teaming up this Saturday (June 23rd) to host a "Black Light Beach: Lazer & Foam Party" at Schellenger & The Boardwalk.

This will be the Northeast, PA-based company's first event in the Wildwoods.

"We have done 25 shows in the past year, all in Pennsylvania," Sound Party's Joe Nardone told us. "We run a tight ship and the events have been successful."

The party will kick off at 8 p.m. and runs until midnight. Admission is $12 (or $10 if you print out and bring the brochure image at right).

For more information, check out the official Facebook event page for the party HERE.

Just your average Wednesday in the 'Woods

Summer officially arrives at 7:09 p.m. tonight. A little less than an hour and a half later, country music megastar Kenny Chesney will take the stage to perform in front of an estimated 25,000 people on the beach.

Hard to believe that just two weeks ago, word of the concert had not yet been made public. Yet, here we are on the Summer Solstice - the longest day of the year - with a massive stage and production set-up just south of Mariner's Landing.

ChesneyMania will culminate tonight, and with it comes a golden opportunity for the Wildwoods to shine!

To those going, have fun, but be safe and responsible. For those at home, remember that the show will air live tonight at 8:30 p.m. EST at youtube.com/KennyChesneyVEVO.

For further details and FAQs on the event, check out http://www.wildwoodsnj.com/Kenny.

New Wipeout! grand opening report

The following entry was compiled by our newest contributor, Brian Foley, who participated in the grand opening of the new Wipeout! slide at Morey's Ocean Oasis on Thursday.

Thanks, Brian!

***************
Awesome.  That is the feeling I had after being one of the lucky individuals to participate in the pre-public opening preview  of the brand new Wipeout waterslide at Morey’s Ocean Oasis this past Thursday.

Morey’s had posted a contest the previous week on their Facebook page to have a chance to participate, but I was not originally selected.  I was down for a planned day trip anyway and was walking back from a visit to the seawall in North Wildwood when I saw the announcement that due to some last minute cancellations, there were spots open.  My fingers could not type fast enough and I soon had a reply to show up at 3:00 PM.

While I normally want a day in Wildwood to go as slow as possible, I anxiously waited for time to move faster until that special time.  I am definitely glad I packed my swim trunks.  What made this day even more special was that it was my birthday.

A special day in Wildwood was going to be more special as I had a chance to participate in a moment of Wildwood history, just like that day in October 2010 when I was able to get one last ride on the original Wipeout.

Wipeout is the futuristic 21st century version of the original Wipeout,(aka Giant Slide) Morey’s first ride that started it all in 1969.  Situated on the southwest side of Ocean Oasis, bordering one of the Zoom Phloom lift hills,  the new Wipeout has taken its place in the Wildwood skyline.

The color scheme is different, the location is different, there are fewer lanes, and the slope goes towards the ocean, but otherwise, it is like the Giant Slide, just with water,  Walking up the wooden steps next to it and seeing the Wildwood skyline invokes memories of the walk up the stairs of the earlier version. Don’t worry, unlike the aging lanes of the original Wipeout, on this one, all six lanes are fully operational and running, so while it is certain to be a popular attraction this summer, the turnaround time should not be too bad.

If I am told to show up at three, I am the type of person that arrives at 2:40. It was a spooky feeling walking back on Ocean Oasis on almost deserted pier. Right behind me was another early arrival, Dianne.  While we waited, we excitedly talked about the race and our shared fondness for everything Wildwood. The event was not open to the public, so the atmosphere was a far departure from a normal day on the pier.  Those present included contestants and their family members, the Morey’s family, including Jack, Will, and even Jack’s dog, along with some media.

The guest services agents were serving as timekeepers and judges, one devoted to each lane.  Refreshments were served during the wait time- the cinnamon cupcakes were out of this world.  Curley the mascot showed up and was a hit with both children and adults, even I wanted my picture taken with Curley.  Dianne and I each returned the favor of taking our picture with Curley.

The Ocean Oasis lifeguards were the first to ride it, I believe so that the judges could practice their judging. They allowed the lucky contestants to take a few practice runs before the actual heats started.  In the end, they only had enough contestants to fill three heats.  The heats were a  mix of adults and children.  The top two winners from each heat then went on to a final heat for the top prize. All final heat placers received a gift bag with a Tony Luke’s gift card and some other Morey’s items.

The top finisher received all of that and a large bag of Morey’s fun items.  Unlike the Giant Slide,  on this new version,  you ride a water raft down the hill, laying on your stomach. The downhill ride was smooth and quick.  There is a bit of a rapid water effect at the bottom just when you think you are done the ride. After the regular race, they had a VIP race, including media personalities, Nicky from Tony Luke’s, and Jack Morey, all whom competed for a $5,000 donation to a charity of their choice.

Alas, I did not make it to the final round, but was able to cheer on my fellow early arrival, Dianne, who was a talented water slider.  It was a memorable way to spend my birthday, have a birthday cupcake, and I have the bragging rights to say that I was one of the first to ride Wipeout.  I’ve tended to be more of a Raging Waters type,  but I have a feeling I will be around Ocean Oasis much more this summer!

Thanks to the Morey’s family for a special day!

The Original Hot Spot celebrates 50 years this Sunday

The Original Hot Spot, 3421 Boardwalk and Cedar Ave. in Wildwood, will celebrate 50 years on Sunday, June 17 from 4 - 6 p.m.

Their anniversary party will feature DJ entertainment and will have complimentary pizza and hot dogs in appreciation for all of the loyal customers and friends they’ve gained throughout the years.

The Original Hot Spot began in 1962 when a hard-working and immensely driven man, Harry Karavangelos, had a vision and followed through with it. He emigrated from Greece at a mere 16 years old and began his future with only a $5 bill in his pocket.

Karavangelos started his career in Philadelphia when his love of food caused him to eat his paycheck, literally. At his first job, he was eating meal after meal to maintain his energy and didn’t realize that with every bite he took, the owners were deducting each and every mouthful from his paycheck. Therefore, he continued on his journey in hopes for something more…all the way to Wildwood.

Harry single-handedly started a trend for all of the Greek Restaurants in Wildwood and was the very first business to serve Gyros on the boardwalk. The original owner of Vegas Diner & Harry’s Corner, he began Hot Spot with just a single steam table, and just one grill.

Together with one of his friends, they worked around the clock, to ensure that their customers had high quality meals at affordable prices. When the business became an extreme success just few years later, he returned to Greece where he snagged his wife, Anastasia, much to her father’s dismay.

Five children and 44 years later, the Karavangelos Family has seven Hot Spot locations throughout Wildwood that are all family owned and operated. Karavangelos also owns Athens and Athens 2 in North Wildwood, as well as Karavangelos Construction that built The Fairview.

Carrying on The Original Hot Spot and Hot Spot #4 (3816 Spicer on the Boardwalk) traditions are his Daughters and Son-in Laws, Haroula and Joe Rotondi and Via and Sal Vampirri.

Each location has become well-known for their wide variety of pizza options and toppings, and their sausage and peppers sandwich. They have family secret recipes for every item you choose and make salads that are absolutely to die for.

All of the owners make it their duty to get to know each and every customer on a personal level, and are always present at the restaurant. Stop in any day of the week from 7:30 a.m. to midnight for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, or to sample their All-You-Can-Eat Buffet Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

About the Greater Wildwoods Tourism Improvement and Development Authority

The Greater Wildwoods Tourism Improvement and Development Authority (GWTIDA) was formed in 1993 to consolidate the tourism economy of its three founding municipalities: Wildwood, Wildwood Crest and North Wildwood. The Wildwoods have won numerous travel and tourism awards, heralding the resort for its beaches, boardwalk and attractions. In 2010, the Wildwoods Doo Wop Architecture was named “One of the Top Ten Architectural Wonders in America” by AOL.com. The Wildwoods were also named among Smarter Travel’s Ten Best Beach Towns in America in 2010, as well as one of Sherman’s Travel’s “Top Ten American Boardwalks” for the second year in a row. In 2009, the Wildwoods were selected as one of Time.com’s “50 Authentic American Experiences.” The Wildwoods made the list of “15 Destinations on the Rise” for TripAdvisor in 2012. In addition, the Wildwoods were also voted “Best Town” in the 2009 and 2011 PHL-17 Philly Hot List, Jersey Shore Edition contest. The Wildwoods were also named “Best Beaches in New Jersey” in the 2008, 2010 and 2011 Top Ten New Jersey Beaches public survey, sponsored by the New Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium. Wildwoods’ beaches were also named “Best Beach for Family Vacations,” “Best Beach for Tourism,” “Best Beach for Events,” “Best Beach for Eco-Tourism” and “Best Beach for Day Trips” in the same surveys. Wildwood was also named “Best Beach” in 2012 by NJ Monthly and “Number One Boardwalk for Families” in 2012 by FamilyVacationCritic.com. The Tourism Authority operates the Wildwoods Convention Center and acts as the island’s destination marketing organization overseeing the development, research, planning, marketing, advertising, promotion, public and media relations encompassing the tourism, meeting and convention industry in the Wildwoods. Additionally, the Authority funds, assists with and hosts more than 180 annual special events to enhance the visitor experience and extend the tourism season, including the Thunder On The Sand Race Series, Family Nights On The Boardwalk, Friday Night Fireworks, the New Jersey State Barbeque Championships and Anglesea Blues Festival, Classic Car Shows, the International Kite Festival, Irish and Italian Festivals and the National Marbles Tournament, among others.
