40 years ago tonight, KISS rocked Wildwood!

During the Summer of 1975, the tale of a killer shark terrorizing a small resort town sent moviegoers into a frenzy, nationwide. For obvious reasons, Jaws resonated in the Wildwoods in a unique and enduring way.

The influence of the film that created and came to define the “blockbuster” genre was everywhere. Up and down the Boardwalk, shops sold Jaws apparel and posters, as the movie played to packed houses at the Blaker Theatre throughout the summer.

In the midst of the mania, an important chapter in the story of another emerging pop culture phenomenon was written. Despite gaining a reputation as a top-flight live act, KISS had earned moderate commercial success with the releases of its first three albums.

"Kisstory" and the Wildwoods collided 40 years ago tonight - July 23, 1975 - when Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Peter Criss, and Ace Frehley came to town and rocked Convention Hall. The performance was a make-up after a scheduled show several weeks earlier had been cancelled due to the band reportedly being involved in a car accident.

A band named “Mushroom” opened for KISS, which was at its blood-spewing, fire-breathing best in performing the hits from Kiss and Hotter Than Hell (both released in 1974) and Dressed to Kill (which came out earlier in 1975 and included the band’s eventual trademark anthem, “Rock and Roll All Nite”).

Unbeknown to the raucous audience at the time, the show was recorded and several songs would later be included onKISS’s fourth release – the double live album Alive! They included “Deuce” (the show opener and album’s first track), “Hotter Than Hell,” “Firehouse,” and “Black Diamond.”

Songs from the 16-track “Alive!” were also recorded that year at concerts in Cleveland, Detroit, and Davenport, Iowa.

The album, released on September 10, 1975, was a landmark release for a number of reasons.
For KISS, it was responsible for their breakthrough into the mainstream. “Alive!” went Gold, spawned the band’s first top 40 single (the live version of “Rock and Roll All Nite”) and essentially saved its record label at the, Neil Bogart’s Casablanca, from financial disaster.

Still regarded by many as KISS’s best album, it peaked at #9 on the album chart, and charted for 100 weeks (by far, the longest I the band’s history). In 2003, it was ranked #159 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

For the music industry as a whole, “Alive!” proved that live albums were a more than viable commodity.

Today, the former location of Convention Hall is the lawn that sits directly in front of the Wildwoods Convention Center, between the Boardwalk and Atlantic Avenue (near Burk).

The next time you pass by, gaze over and try to imagine the history that took place on that very spot. From Elton John to Black Sabbath, Cheech & Chong to Alice Cooper, and Jim Croce to the Marshall Tucker Band, the venue played host to many legendary acts.

Thanks to that unforgettable summer night 40 years ago, the sounds from within will always remain “Alive!”

Wildwood Craft Distillery Offers Taste of History

PRESS RELEASE

A new business on Spicer Avenue guarantees to not only give visitors a taste of history but it also promises to raise the spirits of this seaside city.

With a tasting room and two on-site stills, Lazy Eye Distillery has brought the concept of craft libations to a new level.

Since the 2014 passage of a law that allows craft distilleries only four have opened throughout New Jersey. The recently opened 1,500 square foot Wildwood facility is the only one of its kind in Cape May County.

Bringing a craft distillery to Wildwood was part of the plans for owners Nick and Carol Kadkalas, of Northfield.

“Wildwood played an enormous role during Prohibition,” said Carol Kadkalas, “and unfortunately it does not get enough credit for it.  There is a lot of history here.”

The couple noted the warm reception they have received since they opened the Lazy Eye in late June.

“We are thrilled that Carol and Nick have chosen Wildwood to launch their craft distillery,” said Mayor Ernie Troiano. “They have taken what was a rundown garage and turned it into a world-class distillery and tasting room.

"By bringing a craft distillery to the city they are acknowledging Wildwood’s past while looking forward to the future. Businesses such as the Lazy Eye Distillery are bringing a new, upscale energy to Wildwood.”

Becoming part of the Wildwood business community is a priority for the Kadkalases. They hope to soon partner with local hotels and motels by offering discounted tours and tastings.

The distillery is open every day except Tuesday for tastings and tours. According to Nick Kadkalas, the $10 cost of a tour includes a half-shot taste of each of the three liquors made in the Wildwood stills.

While most vodkas are made from corn or potatoes, Lazy Eye uses grapes as the basis for the mash used to distill their vodka at the Spicer Avenue facility. Each bottle is made in small batches on-site, where each step, from the making of the mash to the fermentation and distillation processes to the bottling is completed under the watchful eye of Kadkalas family.

“We have our regular vodka, our citrus vodka and our Greek spirit, Rakii, which is the first-ever to be produced legally in the United States,” Carol Kadkalas said. Mixed cocktails are available along with individual bottles of vodka.

For those wondering where the name “Lazy Eye” came from, both Carol and Nick Kadkalas are almost mum.  According to the pair, the name was decided upon by them and their two sons.

“Everyone asks,” noted Carol Kadkalas referring to the distillery’s name.   “There are little hints on the bottle,” said her husband. “It’s a mystique.”

Sunny the Tram Car debuts; final design not official

The Boardwalk Sightseers, aka The Tram Cars, are arguably the Wildwoods' most identifiable, historic icons.

Since the service began back in 1949, the colors and designs of the trams have been modified, but no major changes have been made.

No wonder, then, that some heads were turned when something much different was seen carrying passengers up and down the Boardwalk this week.

Judging by the response of our readers, many are curious about the newly-dubbed "Sunny the Tram Car," which is a painted, dressed-up version of the "stock vehicle" that was being tested this Spring.

Once again, we reached out to North Wildwood Mayor Patrick Rosenello, who is also the Managing Director of the Wildwoods Special Improvement District, which oversees operation of the trams.

"We are still putting this prototype through its paces," Rosenello said. "Right now we are primarily focused on the electrical and mechanical systems of the unit.

"While we did paint it and logo it to be appropriate for the Boardwalk, we have not made any final design decisions."

So, we're still looking at a prototype that is in a testing phase.

There are currently eight tram engines (not including Sunny) and eight trains in the Sightseer fleet. Two of the trains are new, in their second year of operation after being replicated.

Several of the engines are aging and, as Rosenello told us earlier, replacement parts are becoming more and more scarce. This presents a variety of obvious challenges to keep the trams running as they are.

"At this point, we're looking at a scenario where we may have to start looking at reducing the fleet and cannibalizing some of the existing engines to keep the remaining ones going," he told Wildwood 365 back in March.

New Tower Brings More Safety to Wildwood Beach

PRESS RELEASE

This city’s Beach Patrol now has added a new layer of protection in helping to keep swimmers and beachgoers safe, a 20-foot tower, dubbed, “Tower X.”

Located on the beach at Lincoln Avenue, the newest addition to the beach patrol’s arsenal of safety measures made its debut July 1.

"We continue to work diligently to make sure visitors to our beach are protected,” said Commissioner for Public Safety Tony Leonetti. “This observation tower is another level of protection to enhance Wildwood’s beach patrol services.”

“The tower increases our sightline by about 12 to 15 feet,” said Wildwood Beach Patrol Chief Steven Stocks. On average, a lifeguard sitting in a traditional lifeguard chair, has a sightline of approximately eight feet.

“This gives us a better view of the surf zone,” Stocks said. “The lifeguard can read the ocean better, see the waves better, see the rip currents better and account for all of the people in his area of responsibility better because he or she is higher than in a lifeguard stand.”

According to Stocks, the tower will not be used for direct lifeguarding, but will give another level of observation that will overlap the lifeguards.  The tower will act like a waterline substation of the Wildwood Beach Patrol Headquarters.

“If a senior guard or lieutenant is in the observation tower, they probably now have an area of five or six beaches where they can see the guards clearly and see all the people in the water very clearly. We’ll be able to take a look at the water conditions, at the crowd conditions, at the rip current conditions, at the lifeguard operations,” explained the chief.

According to Leonetti, use of the tower was provided at no cost to the city by one of the city’s annual events, the Race for Gentlemen, that is held every October and brings classic vehicles to the beach. The observation tower, which will be manned on an as-needed basis, is the only one on the Five Mile Island.

“We’re fortunate to be able to utilize the tower,” Leonetti said. “Having the increased field of vision where lifeguards can watch not only the beach and the swimmers, but also ocean conditions, is key to helping keep everyone safer on our beaches.”

Even with the new tower Stocks said observing basic safety rules is the first line of defense for keeping safe on the beach.

“Please swim in front of a lifeguard stand and only go in the ocean when the lifeguards are on duty.”

Lifeguards are on duty daily from 10 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.

Contest registration for the third annual Wildwood Crest Amateur Sand Sculpting Festival will begin onsite at 9 a.m. on the day of the event. Sand pits will be assigned, with carving starting at 10 a.m. sharp.

To ensure a level playing field, the contest will have seven separate divisions ranging from youth solo/groups to adult solo and teams. New to this year’s contest is the creation of a pro/am division for more experienced adult sculptors.

Sculptures will be judged on creativity, execution, composition and overall presentation. Prizes and awards will be presented to first through third places in each division. There will also be a People’s Choice award for Best On The Beach, with the winner voted by spectator ballot.

One of the artists at last year’s Wildwood Crest Sand Sculpting Festival
explains his work to some of the crowd gathered at the Heather Road beach.

“We’ve been overwhelmed with how successful this event has become in just its first two years and we’re really looking forward to this year’s festival,” Long said. “Wildwood Crest is not just one of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever been to, but it also has some of the finest beach sand in the world for sculpting.”

Prior to contest day, on Thursday and Friday, July 9-10, Long will be carving one of his masterful castles at the site, providing an opportunity for those interested to stop by, ask questions and pick up some professional tricks and tips.
