Retired Tram Car gets new lease on life: Museum launches fundraising campaign to preserve iconic Jersey Shore treasure

PRESS  RELEASE

WILDWOOD, NJ - The phrase "Watch the Tram Car, Please," the hum of the motor and the laughter of generations past: Tram Car #8 is coming home, and the Wildwood Historical Society is leading the charge to preserve this piece of Jersey Shore history.

For over 70 years, the iconic Sightseer tram cars have glided along the boardwalk, transporting beachgoers to memories and moments that last a lifetime. The historical society is leading a fundraising campaign to restore Tram Car #8, one of the last remaining traditional tram cars, to its former glory.

As part of the campaign, the museum is offering 2026 Wildwood Calendars featuring historical images of Wildwood scenes.

The calendars are available online for $16.99 and will be shipped in time for the holidays. In past years, the calendars made for popular gifts for friends and family who love the Jersey Shore, history or supporting preservation.

"The tram cars hold a special place in the hearts of Wildwood residents and visitors," said historical society president Taylor Henry. "We're thrilled to have the opportunity to preserve one and share it with the community. The calendars make a great gift and support a wonderful cause."

Tram cars have been an iconic part of the Jersey Shore since 1949, when the first cars were introduced to transport beachgoers along the Wildwood Boardwalk. With their distinctive design and colorful pain jobs, the tram cars quickly became a symbol of Wildwood's nostalgic charm.

Over the years, the tram cars have served millions of passengers, providing a convenient and fun way to experience the beach and boardwalk. Engine #8 has operated on the Wildwood Boardwalk for decades. It was retired from service at the end of the summer and is now waiting to be restored to its former glory.

Revenue from sales will go towards transporting the engine to its new home, where it will undergo a transformation involving returning it to its original blue-and-yellow color scheme.

The restored tram car will become a hands-on exhibit at the museum, where visitors can sit inside and take pictures. The museum is seeking support from the community to help with the restoration efforts.

The calendars can be ordered online at:
