Tree Lighting Opens Season in North Wildwood

PRESS RELEASE

NORTH WILDWOOD — The Christmas season is officially underway here after Mayor Bill Henfey lit the Christmas tree at Hereford Lighthouse Friday evening.

Bitter cold, windy weather didn’t deter hundreds of merry people from enjoying the old-fashioned celebration that included songs by Dolly McGee, music by the Margaret Mace Choir, and a visit from Santa.

Many took advantage of the occasion to tour the lighthouse free of charge. Hot chocolate and cookies were available, too. And some even did a bit of Christmas shopping in the Gift Shop, where Steve Murray’s new book, “Guardians of the Hereford Inlet," as well as “Cooking with Friends” (Friends of the Hereford Lighthouse, that is), were for sale.

Henfey said, “This heart-warming, family event was the perfect protection against the wintry weather. The Christmas spirit filled the courtyard as our whole community huddled together excitedly waiting for Santa.”

The North Wildwood Holiday Decorating Contest is also in progress. If you haven’t already, you’ll want to sign up by Friday, Dec. 10. For more information, call 609-523-2728.

"Cookies for Cancer" bake sale November 14

COURT HOUSE — Cookies for Cancer is a not-for-profit organization committed to raising funds to support research for new and improved therapies for pediatric cancers.

Cookies for Kids' Cancer is a not-for-profit organization committed to raising funds to support research for new and improved therapies for pediatric cancers.

Through local bake sales, Cookies for Kids' Cancer provides the inspiration and support for individuals, communities, and businesses to help fight pediatric cancer.

Terri Dauria of Wildwood will hold a bake sale at the Acme Shopping Plaza on Nov. 14, in Court House 10 a.m. until the last cookie is sold.

Dauria knows all too well about pediatric cancer, her grandson, Cameron was diagnosed at the age of one and half years old with cancer.

Cameron is now in remission, enjoying his life. This is the Dauria Family way of helping other young children and their families in their time of need. Because after all... who doesn't love a good cookie?

The first Cookies for Kids' Cancer bake sale was held in December 2007, when the mom of a young child with cancer decided to have an enormous bake sale where she and others would sell 96,000 cookies to raise money to help fund a pediatric cancer treatment in development.

With the help of more than 250 volunteers, all 96,000 cookies were baked and sold in just three weeks. The bake sale raised over $400,000. From the support the first bake sale received, the idea to create an organization for people to hold their own bake sales came to life with the creation of a national organization.

Cookies for Kids’ Cancer is not about one child or one type of pediatric cancer. It is about changing the facts of pediatric cancer for the better, forever. Childhood cancers are the number one disease killer of children; more than asthma, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis and pediatric AIDS combined.

Nearly 13,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year. Survivors of childhood cancer face a broad range of physical and psychological challenges imposed by the disease, and some will suffer its long-term effects for the rest of their lives. Despite all these statistics, there has not been a new drug developed specifically for pediatric cancer in 20 years.

Together folks can raise the funds and awareness necessary to change the face of pediatric cancer research and to provide more families and children with the hope they deserve.

Cookies for Kids' Cancer is committed to raising the funds to support research for new and improved therapies for pediatric cancer. Make the future of pediatric cancers something more than a scary statistic. Join the fight because every child deserves a chance to live its dreams.

Visit www.Cookiesforkidscancer.org to find how you can support Cookies for Kids' Cancer.

Wildwood event named 52nd greatest Globetrotter moment

The Harlem Globetrotters are presently celebrating their 85th consecutive year of touring the world. To mark the occasion, the team is counting down the list of its top 85 moments on its official website.

A memorable event at the Wildwoods Convention Center has come in at #52:

March 17, 2008 - For the first time in nearly 25 years, the Harlem Globetrotters play without their traditional, world-famous red, white and blue ball.

The Globetrotters used a special green ball to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day at their stops in Birmingham, Ala., and Wildwood, N.J.

The team autographed the green balls, with one presented after the games to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. (where the Globetrotters are proud inductees), and the other auctioned off to benefit the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, the world’s largest volunteer-driven fundraising program for childhood cancer research.

In Wildwood, Flight Time Lang and many of his Globetrotter teammates grew their hair out for the event, and then had their heads shaved in a show of solidarity for children with cancer. Fans who did the same received complimentary tickets to the game.

The Globetrotters first began using a red, white and blue ball during the 1985 season, and it has been their signature ball ever since.
