Whale washes ashore on the Crest beach

A 15-foot pilot whale washed ashore on the beach near Preston/Syracuse Avenues in the Crest this morning.

The deceased creature weighs close to a ton, according to the Marine Mammal Stranding Center.

It was transported to the New Bolton Center in Kennett Square, Chester County, PA, where a necropsy will be performed tonight or tomorrow.

We have more photos of the scene on our Facebook page, courtesy of Mark Petti, Sr.

(Note: I can't speak for anyone else, but it's a shame that it takes an event like this for me to truly appreciate the beauty of these creatures. Perhaps more research and a better understanding of the wonders of the nearby sea are in order...   - Al)
