Splash Zone to debut an "East Coast first" this year

Recently, I had the opportunity to talk with Lisa Handt Fagan, Marketing Director for Splash Zone Water Park (3500 Boardwalk), who graciously filled me in on the park's plans for the 2011 season.

The big news is the ongoing revamp of the Midnight Run slide, which is receiving a Splash Encounters system from Lasertech Productions Inc. of Mundelein, Illinois.

According to Fagan, this installation is the first of its kind on the East Coast. Features include a video waterscreen that will line the interior of the enclosed slide, accompanied with multi-color lighting elements, and music and sound effects.

An interactive touchscreen menu at the top of the slide will allow riders to customize their experience by selecting from a variety of themed options.

Check out a DEMO of the system in action, at Kings Pointe Waterpark in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Along with the re-theming of Midnight Run, Splash Zone is holding a contest to rename the slide.

The winning entry will receive a prize package that includes an exclusive "First Ride" on Opening Day, two season passes, a pair of individual day passes, customized t-shirt, free pizza and unlimited Coke on your first visit, and a $100 donation to the charity of your choice!

Splash Zone opens May 28th (Memorial Day Saturday) and will operate through Labor Day.

* Note: Many of our readers have been asking about rumors surrounding the fate of Supercade, Paul's Idaho Fries, and other longtime businesses on the grounds of what was formerly Nickel's Midway Pier. We will have an update on that subject soon, as many of the details are still being worked out.
