Crest will not ban smoking on beach

According to a report in the Cape May County Herald, the possibility of banning smoking on the beach in Wildwood Crest was discussed at a meeting on February 21.

Recently-elected Commissioner David Thompson asserted his belief that government sometimes overreaches into citizens' behavor and would not support such a ban. Mayor Don Cabrera and Commissioner Joyce Gould concurred.

At present, there are 12 smoke free beaches in New Jersey: Belmar, Cape May Point, Long Beach (May 20 - October 1), Long Branch, Longport, Ocean Grove, Sea Girt, Somers Point, Sunset Beach in Lower Township and Upper Township.

A smoking ban on the Boardwalk in North Wildwood and Wildwood went into effect on January 1 of this year.
