Boardwalk smoking ban now in effect

As of today, smoking is officially illegal on the Wildwoods Boardwalk.

Last Spring, Wildwood and North Wildwood officials voted unanimously to pass laws prohibiting lighting up along the world famous promenade and its entrance ramps, and on the beach within 10 feet of the boardwalk.

The potential fine for violating the new law in North Wildwood is $250. Along the Wildwood section, it is $1,000 or 90 days in jail.

Upon adaptation of the ordinance last year, North Wildwood Mayor Patrick Rosenello stressed the importance of cleaner air on the boardwalk. He also cited numerous trash can fires that have had to be extinguished every year due to discarded cigarettes.

"[Summer 2017] will be our opportunity to educate and get the word out about the smoking ban, ahead of next year," he said at the time. "This will be another vital improvement toward furthering the boardwalk and the Wildwoods' standing as a world class family destination."
