Event Spotlight: Unlocking of the Ocean Ceremony, May 26


You never know who may show up...
The Wildwoods kick off the summer season with this annual celebration, on the Friday leading into Memorial Day Weekend.

Tourism and city officials, along with special guests, will welcome visitors back to the island's beaches. The festivities culminate when a large, ornate key is pressed into the sand to "unlock the ocean."

The ceremony takes place at the site of the Wildwoods International Kite Festival, which officially begins simultaneously. A parade of local school children with their own-crafted kites is one of the yearly highlights.

The Beach at Andrews Avenue, south side of the Wildwoods Convention Center

Local officials, special guests and speakers, 300+ elementary school children with kites in the air

IF YOU GO...

  • The Unlocking of the Ocean is FREE to attend.
  • Spectators can watch the ceremony from the beach (space may be limited) or the Boardwalk. 
  • Duration of the event is roughly 20-30 minutes.
