New Sand Jamm store coming to 26th & New Jersey

Hours after a crew from A.B.S. Sign Company installed the two-section "Sand Jamm" neon sign in its new location, Stephen Mendel's excitement was palpable.

"I was just outside, looking up at it again. We had a beautiful, deep blue sky as a backdrop, and as fate would have it, today is the first day of spring. It's a symbolic new start, but I didn't plan it this way," said the owner of the popular surf shop.

Mendel, whose iconic boardwalk business will soon open at this new site, 26th & New Jersey Avenues, also noted that this will be his 26th season in Wildwoods.

Since 2006, Sand Jamm and its bright, plastic palm tree-decorated facade, has been a fixture on the Boardwalk at Juniper Avenue - at the base of the former Hunt's Pier. Prior to that, Mendel operated out of a smaller shop near Spencer Avenue.

This summer will be the last for Sand Jamm on the Boardwalk. After that, Mendel will focus all of his attention on the new standalone store on New Jersey. The building, which has sat vacant for several years, was most recently the home of Shore Decor, a nautical-themed gift shop.

It sits on the North Wildwood side of 26th, on the same block as Shoobie's Good Eats and Wildwood Glass. The corner spot is adjacent to Green's Liquors and diagonal from Larkin's Restaurant, both on the Wildwood side.

"It's been an incredible ride, but after 25 years on the Boardwalk, I felt it was time for a change," Mendel explained. "We're looking forward to bringing new vibrancy to this location and putting our stamp on something unique."

The new Sand Jamm store has been extensively renovated inside and out, with a number of features we will be detailing in our next report.

Stay tuned!
