Wildwood Lights are Symbol of Peace

WILDWOOD – The lights of this city’s world-famous Boardwalk have long been part of the Wildwood experience for millions. Now, those lights have become part of a flowing video light art piece that is being shared throughout the world as a symbol of peace and non-violence.

“This is an extraordinary honor for the city,” said Wildwood Mayor Ernie Troiano. “Our Boardwalk has always been a place for people from all walks of life to meet and enjoy what Wildwood has to offer and now that experience is being shared world-wide.”

“Peace Lights,” was created by artists Peter Rogina and Eileen Cohen. It is “flowing video light-art piece created to raise awareness for the causes of peace and to affect attitudes and behaviors for both immediate and lasting worldwide impact.”

According to Rogina, who is a summer resident of the Five Mile Island, his visits Wildwood inspired him to shoot light photographs on the Boardwalk.  Many of the photographs he took were animated and shown at events in New York City.

“Peace Lights” has received the official endorsement of the United Nations’ The International Year of Light organization and will be used at each of the organization’s events, including the closing ceremonies in Mexico. Rogina said talks have also begun with NASA (National Aeronautic and Space Administration) to show “Peace Lights” on symbolically project “Peace Lights” from the International Space Station back down onto Earth for several hours. 

“I like the idea of the Wildwood Boardwalk lights being symbolically projected around the world as a symbol of peace,” stated Rogina.

“We are happy to be a part of this project,” Troiano said. “Everyone should have the experience of seeing Wildwood’s lights and enjoying a moment of peace.”
