PRESS RELEASE

WILDWOOD - Saturday mornings in Wildwood are now even more delicious. On June 28, officials cut the ribbon marking the grand opening of the Downtown Wildwood Farmers Market.

Located at the corner of Schellenger and Pacific avenues, the market offers shoppers more than 20 booths offering everything from locally grown produce and honey to wine, olive oils and artisinal teas.  The market is open rain or shine every Saturday through Aug. 30 from 8:30 a.m.  to 1 p.m.

If the first day was any indication of the next 10 weeks, the market is a huge hit.  Hundreds of people walked through the one-block square market. In addition to vendors offering samples of their wares, a stilt walker made his way through the crowd as a balloon artist fashioned hats and other latex “works of art” for children and adults.

“This is fantastic,” said Commissioner Pete Byron, who oversees the city’s departments of Revenue and Finance.  “This is the first step to build confidence in the commercial district. We’re hoping that this is going to give incentive to other people to come to town and start opening up businesses on Pacific Avenue.”

Mayor Ernie Troiano congratulated the Wildwood Business Improvement District (BID) for putting together the market.

“This is a tremendous idea that we hope turns into something even more as it expands,” said Troiano as he presented a proclamation from the city declaring June 28 as Downtown Wildwood Farmers Market Day throughout Wildwood.

The mayor noted during his youth, “Wildwood was the mecca of shopping. Hopefully this is the beginning of people coming back to Pacific Avenue and it will show that we have more to offer than just the beach and the boardwalk.

"This farmers market is a tremendous idea. We’re excited about it and we hope everyone enjoys it.”
