Monday Memories: Wildwood 1961 (Video)

It's always a treat when vintage video footage of the Wildwoods surfaces, particularly in the form of old home movies (when history and memories collide - we all win).

The link to the video above was sent to us by reader John Mason. This 8mm footage comes from John's first trip to the island, with his parents and uncle in 1961, and features some great shots of Hunt's Pier and the beach.

There's also a really cool glimpse of Odger's Restaurant, on the beach, near the beginning. Odger's sat on the present location of Morey's Surfside Pier, at 26th Avenue.

We haven't yet identified the hotel shown at about the 2:30 mark of the video. Any ideas?

Thanks again to John for sharing!

  4. It was so different back then, not as hectic. In fact the beach did not seem so crowded either. Great film

  5. Wow, I am 57 years old so not much different in age from the boy in the film. I now make Wildwood my home and love it.

  6. I would have been 3 when that was taken and watching it reminded me of all the family photos we have from when we were little and vacationing in Wildwood. Loved it and thanks for sharing this.

  7. In the beginning of the video you see Odger's Seafood Resturaunt, which was bought by the Morey's and is where the built Morey's Pier. They added the Giant Slide, the Rock-o-Planes, and the Zipper and a couple of carvival wheels of chance games. The ret is history. I met Ernie Odgers. He worked on the Wildwood Beach Partol with my cousin Bill Holmes.
