Carriage Stop Condo Units Set for Auction

According to the Press of Atlantic City, 25 condo units housed in the property formerly known as the Carriage Stop Motel in Wildwood Crest (Atlantic & St. Paul Aves.) will be placed up for bank-ordered auction on October 31.

The auction will be held at the Clarion Hotel, on the Black Horse Pike in Egg Harbor Township. Minimum bid is expected to be set at $35,000 for efficiency and junior one-bedroom units and $55,000 for one-bedroom units.

Two other properties will also be up for auction, including the Gillmore Hotel at 134 E. Schellenger Ave. (see article for full details).

The Carriage Stop building, opened in 1959, remains perhaps the island's best example of what the Doo Wop Preservation League terms the "Phony Colonee" style; its brick patters, lantern lights, and other architectural elements were designed to echo the Revolutionary era.

The property operated as a motel up until a few years ago, when the owners decided to convert the units into individual condos. Although the majority of the rooms have been renovated, the building has maintained its look, and most of its original "Doo Wop" style points.
