THE WILDWOODS - The Wildwoods will kick off Memorial Day Weekend festivities with the 37th Annual International Kite Festival, the largest kite festival in North America. This weekend-long festival features kite makers from around the world flying their most incredible colorful creations over the Wildwoods' FREE white sandy beaches.
The Kite Festival is FREE to spectators and kicks off on Friday, May 26 at noon with the Unlocking of the Ocean Ceremony on the beach at Andrews Avenue, south of the Wildwoods Convention Center. Kite festivities follow with the opening of the Kite Sales Tent, a Friday night kite social and the 9 pm illuminated kite fly at the Rio Grande Avenue beach behind the famous "WILDWOODS" sign.
The Kite Festival continues Saturday, May 27 and Sunday, May 28, starting at 9 am daily with fun events geared toward introducing new folks to the sport of kiting!
On Saturday, May 27, the quad-line kite flyers will engage in varied scheduled activities such as team flying, stack flying, mystery ballet and a Learn To Fly field which includes four-line kites. Quad line performers are opening a one-hour time slot on Saturday and Sunday for the public to step onto the beach and try their kites.
On Saturday and Sunday, join in the Kite Candy Drop, the Running of the Bols; fly a kite on the Learn to Fly Field; or watch the professional Fighter Kite Competition. Also featured are FREE kite exhibits and workshops on the beach.
The Wildwoods International Kite Festival Auction will be held inside the Wildwoods Convention Center beginning with a silent auction at 7 pm and loud auction at 8 pm on Saturday. The auction is open to the public, and many unique kites and collectibles will be up for bid.
On Sunday, May 28, join Fighter Kite pros Andy Selzer, Bob Hegman and Rick and Carol Mingeram for an "Introduction to Fighter Kites" workshop. This on-site, hands-on workshop will take place at 9 am on Field 1. If you don't know what a Fighter Kite is or have been intimidated in trying your hand at it, this is your opportunity to be welcomed into the sport of flying maneuverable single line kites.
The basic idea of workshop is to introduce the art of line-touch competition and will include an education on Fighter Kites, learning how to handle the line, practice time with the pros, followed by a line touch mock competition for all those that are game.
The kite festivities conclude with the World Indoor Kite Competition at the Wildwoods Convention Center on Monday, May 29 from 9:30 am - noon, and is FREE to attend. Kite fliers will showcase their impressive ability to fly a kite indoors without wind, with choreographed performances paying tribute to the music of the Beatles.
