WILDWOOD, NJ - The City of Wildwood is very pleased to announce that work has begun on the construction of new amenities at the Byrne Community Center Complex. Centrally located in a largely year-round residential neighborhood on just over 11 acres of land, the complex is an oasis of green space, passive recreation and active recreation areas.
With its new features, it is envisioned that the site will serve as a destination of wellness for individuals of all ages and abilities, drawing visitors from the city, the island and neighboring communities.
"This is a tremendous project that will put the Byrne Community Center Complex on the map as a premier destination for health and wellness. The city is thankful for the partnership with the county and Open Spaces Program that is making it possible," said Mayor Pete Byron.
According to Leslie Gimeno, County Planning Director, the Open Spaces Program leverages partnerships to expand the network of preserved lands, to develop high quality active and passive recreation facilities and to preserve our county's rich history. Since the program's inception in 1989, over $80 million in county taxpayers' funds have been invested in local communities for preservation and recreation purposes.
A $2.9 million Open Spaces grant has been awarded to the Byrne Community Center Complex project, with an additional $1.19 million award to complete the project being anticipated in 2023.
The city planned the improvements to the complex to keep the diverse interests and abilities of residents and visitors in mind. Currently, construction is underway on a new community fitness track, which will allow users to walk, jog and run in an environment free of vehicles and other potential conflicts.
An outdoor exercise area with equipment stations with signage offering a variety of exercise routines will be installed adjacent to the track. Here, folks will be able to customize their workouts based on personal goals and objectives.
The second phase of the project will include the construction of new basketball courts and an inclusive playground, complete with shade structures, benches and other amenities for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy. Wayfinding signage designed in keeping with the Open Spaces Creative Placemaking Plan will be installed to help guide visitors to amenities both on the site and in the surrounding community.
The Placemaking Plan is used in the design of all recreation projects funded by the Open Spaces Program as a way of building recognition of the county's public spaces and of the investment of county taxpayers' funds in those places.
"We are very excited at the opportunities that the new improvements will offer to people of all ages, interests and abilities. We pledge to expand the programs and activities offered by our Recreation Department to get folks here and to get them active when construction is complete in late Spring 2023," said Mayor Byron.
