Beach boxes earn 42 percent revenue increase in Wildwood for 2019, 175 percent increase overall

PRESS RELEASE

WILDWOOD, NJ  -  The City of Wildwood is proud to announce the most successful season yet for their beach box storage system. The beach boxes are '4x4' units that can store chairs, umbrellas and beach gear close to the water to take the hassle out of going to the beach.

In January, the city announced a new booking method that would increase revenue and ease the booking process for seasonal renters. Instead of booking all units on a first-come, first-serve basis, the units were separated in the booking system as seasonal or weekly units. Only two weekly units per street were allocated until Memorial Day. With the former booking process, seasonal renters would miss out if a weekly renter booked one week in a beach box. The city would also lose the full potential revenue of the unit.

Once seasonal renters secured their boxes, the City of Wildwood's Department of Beach Services monitored the website to allocate leftover seasonal boxes to weekly renters. This made it easier to continue to provide availability for Wildwood's travelers and increase the efficiency of the rental system.

Mayor Ernie Troiano, Jr. decided to make the change in the booking process after regaining department oversight at the end of 2018. He also decided to work with the Borough of Wildwood Crest through a Shared Services Agreement to extend the boxes from Cresse Avenue to Washington Avenue. The Crest Beach Boxes were listed as all seasonal units and sold out within two days. In addition to the booking strategy and expansion, Troiano decided to increase rates by $15 on a weekly unit and $25 on a seasonal unit after comparing to other area storage systems and seeing Wildwood was greatly underpriced.

The successful season for the beach boxes will allow for expansion of units in both Wildwood and Wildwood Crest. After many requests, Troiano and the Department of Beach Services are in talks with North Wildwood; however no formal arrangements have been made at this time. Beach boxes for 2020 will be offered staring on January 2, with 2019 seasonal renters given first opportunity to rebook the same units.
