PRESS RELEASE
The Wildwoods will officially kick off the 2018 summer season at the Unlocking of the Ocean Ceremony on Friday, May 25 at noon on the beach next to the Wildwoods Convention Center.
Tourism and state, county and city officials, guest speakers and over 300 elementary school children will participate in the ceremony to officially ‘unlock’ the ocean with a large, ornate key to kick off the summer season. There will be hundreds of colorful kites in the air and after the ‘unlocking.’
The school children will fly kites that they made earlier that morning in kite-making workshops inside the Convention Center to launch the 2018 International Kite Festival. This event is FREE to attend.
The 33rd Annual Wildwoods International Kite Festival, the largest kite festival in North America, also begins that day and features kite makers from around the world flying their most incredible colorful creations. The kite festival officially starts at 9 p.m. on Friday, May 25 featuring an illuminated night kite fly on the beach at Rio Grande Avenue.
The Kite Festival continues on Saturday, May 26 and Sunday, May 27, starting at 9 a.m. daily with fun events geared toward introducing new folks to the sport of kiting! Join in the Candy Drop, Running of the Bols, Rev Games or Rokkaku Team Challenge; fly a kite on the Learn to Fly Field; or watch the Fighter Kite Competition and Stunt Kite Competition. More fun is to be had with free kite exhibits and workshops on the beach.
The Wildwoods International Kite Festival Auction will be held inside the Wildwoods Convention Center at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 26. The auction is open to the public and many unique kites and collectibles will be up for bid.
The kite festivities conclude with the World Indoor Kite Competition at the Wildwoods Convention Center on Monday, May 28 from 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Kite fliers will showcase their impressive ability to fly a kite without wind, and all performances will be choreographed to music.
