Douglass Fudge opens for 98th season, makes history

When it comes to iconic landmarks of the Wildwoods, Douglass Fudge is at the top of the list.

In fact, when the timeless sweets shop at 3300 Boardwalk reopens its doors today, it will do so, officially, as the oldest continuously-operated business on the island.

The Douglass tradition dates back to 1919, marking 98 seasons of service. While we're still researching this topic, we do not believe that any store, restaurant, etc. in the Wildwoods has ever made it to the 100-year mark.

Last October, Silen's Shoes & Beachwear at 5000 Pacific closed after what is believed to be 97 years of operation. Retiring owner Barry Rasmussen traces the start of his great grandfather, John Silen's, store to 1919 as well.

At any rate, Douglass Fudge now stands alone.

The shop opens for the 2017 season this morning at 11 a.m., along with its sister location at 9600 3rd Avenue in Stone Harbor.
