Site approved for North Wildwood Dog Park; city aiming for Memorial Day Weekend opening

The City of North Wildwood has approved a site for the proposed North Wildwood Dog Park, it was announced at a City Council meeting on Tuesday night.

The area lies on the beach between 24th and 25th Avenues, directly in front of the Boardwalk.

"It's a good sized area, about 260 x 260 feet," Councilman Joe Rullo told Wildwood 365. "It's a prime spot, which will have great access and visibility to locals and visitors."

Rullo explained that he will continue to work with a small committee of residents to work on design and other details, with the aim of a Memorial Day Weekend opening.

"There are details to be worked out," he said. "The insurance aspects, obviously. Then things like signage, rules and regulations, administrative things to put down on paper. We're very pleased with the way this is being received by the community, and are excited about moving ahead with it."

The dog park would be located approximately three blocks north of the Wildwood Dog Park, which opened on the beach at Juniper Avenue (to the immediate south of the old Hunt's Pier) back in June.

The North Wildwood park will not include access to the ocean, but rather a closed area where dogs can run freely and mingle with their furry friends year round.

"The plan is to have two sections - a gated area where the dogs and owners will enter, and then a larger fenced-in area where dogs will be able to run freely without leashes," Rullo said.

According to Rullo, who owns a three-year-old silver lab named Thunder, the idea of a dog park in North Wildwood has been in play for some time.

"This has been a community effort from the start. The lines of communication have been open and there has been a lot of great feedback between the city and residents during the early stages of this project. And that will continue."

Rullo noted that potential features for the new dog park include a hydration station, a shaded area and a gazebo.

We will continue to follow the progress of this project in the months to come.
