The Wildwoods, NJ – Start your engines and cruise on down to the Wildwoods for one of the most exciting car enthusiast weekends at the Jersey Shore. It’s the 8th Annual Classic Car Auction and the 21st Annual Boardwalk Classic Car Show the weekend of September 18 – 20, hosted by Wildwood Motor Events and sponsored by the Greater Wildwoods Tourism Improvement and Development Authority. 

The 8th Annual Classic Car Auction kicks off the weekend on Thursday, September 18 at the Wildwoods Convention Center, where an impressive and intriguing variety of luxury and exotic cars, muscle cars and classic cars still in existence today will be on display for previewing and auctioning.

The classic cars for the auction can be previewed inside the Oceanfront Arena at the Wildwoods Convention Center on Thursday, September 18 from 3 - 10 p.m. and again on Friday, September 19 from noon - 5 p.m. Auctioning of these vehicles to the highest bidders will be held from 6 - 9 p.m. on Friday, September 19 and again on Saturday, September 20 from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. by the Nationally Renowned Adcock Family.

Vendors offering memorabilia, car collectibles, parts and accessories will be on-hand during the preview and auction, and admission is FREE to spectators.

The 21st Annual Boardwalk Classic Car Show will be set in motion on Friday, September 19 and Saturday, September 20 from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. daily. The weekend will take spectators back in time to experience the craftsmanship and beauty of hundreds of restored classic cars displayed on the world-famous Wildwoods Boardwalk.

Prizes will be awarded to the Top 40 cars and one car will be selected as Best in Show. Admission is FREE to spectators.

The Wildwoods, NJ – The Greater Wildwoods Tourism Improvement & Development Authority (GWTIDA) held a ‘Fall into the Wildwoods’ press conference to kick off the Wildwoods’ action-packed Second Season today, August 28.

 The press conference, which took place in front of the Wildwoods sign at Rio Grande Avenue & the Boardwalk, demonstrated that the excitement in the Wildwoods extends well into the fall – a time period the Wildwoods fondly calls its Second Season.

 Event promoters and representatives from major Second Season events were also on hand to tout the success of the Wildwoods Second Season during which thinner crowds and warm fall weather make for the best time to be at the shore.

Representatives from The Mummers String Band Show, Irish Fall Festival, Boardwalk Classic Car Show & Classic Car Auction, Seafarer’s Celebration, Olde Time Italian Festival, Monster Truck Races, Seafood and Music Festival, The Governor’s Cup Hydrofest Powerboat Races and the Fabulous ‘50s & Beyond Weekend addressed attendees, adding to the excitement of the morning and anticipation of the coming months.

“As the temperatures begin to cool and the kids return to school, the Wildwoods are revving things up once again for our exciting Second Season,” executive director of GWTIDA John Siciliano said.

“GWTIDA provides funding each year to host these special events and themed weekends which are a proven method to bring business to our local hotels, Boardwalk and restaurants during the shoulder season.”

Wildwood Vies for Record of World's Largest Ice Bucket Challenge

Come Take the Plunge!

Make this Labor Day weekend a memorable one - come be part of setting two new world's records and help raise funds for ALS!

Mark Sat. August, 30th on your calendar because that's the day Splash Zone Water Park will be hosting a community partner event in an effort to raise funds and awareness of ALS.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.

In addition to raising funds and awareness, two world records may be broken - most water used in an ice bucket challenge and most people at one time taking the challenge.

Organizers of the event are hoping for a huge turnout to stand beneath Splash Zone’s 1,000 gallon bucket and get wet to help those who suffer from the debilitating neuromuscular disease.

“Any time you can generate research dollars for a tremendous cause like ALS, it becomes a win/win for all,” said Wildwood Mayor Ernie Troiano Jr.

“The City of Wildwood encourages everyone to participate in this worthy cause.”

Check in for the plunge begins at 11 a.m. Aug. 30  with the big bucket tipping over at high noon. A minimum $10 donation is required and on-line registration is mandatory. There will be no on-site registration the day of the plunge and the registration site will close 12 hours prior to the event.

All participants will receive a commemorative t-shirt and bragging rights to say "I took the plunge!"

The Wildwoods, NJ – The undead are back to haunt the boardwalk of Wildwoods, NJ.  On September 27, 2014, Morey’s Piers will host The Zombie Mud Run, a post-apocalyptic 5K obstacle race along the beach and piers.

The thrilling zombie-themed race challenges runners to eat or be eaten as they face obstacles including huge sand mounds, slides and “quicksand” pits.

Combining both natural and manmade hurdles, the course will take participants through the ocean, under the boardwalk to the deep, dark, recesses of the unknown, and down Morey’s Piers’ famed 60 feet tall six-lane water slide – WipeOut!

Adding another element of adventure, this year’s course will include a ride on Morey’s Great White wooden roller coaster. *Must meet all safety and height requirements to ride.

Racers are invited to register as either a “Human,” with the mission to save the human race by escaping the living dead, or as a “Zombie,” who will “hunt” the “Human” runners adding an extra degree of challenge to the race.

All participating runners will receive a complimentary wristband valid for admission to the amusement rides at Mariner’s Piers located at Schellenger Avenue and the Boardwalk on the day of the race. Mariner’s Pier will be open noon until 10:00pm, with the ghoulishly popular Ghost Ship attraction open from 5:00pm to 10:00pm.

During the race, “Humans” will wear a flag football belt with three flags, representing their vital organs, which “Zombies” will try to “eat” by capturing the flags. Whether you survive or get infected, everyone is invited to refuel at Wrecker’s Beach Grille located at Raging Waters Water Park located at the end of Mariner’s Pier. A variety of food and beverages will be available for purchase, including a selection of beers for those 21 years and over.

To participate as a “Human” or “Zombie,” runners must be at least 13 years of age or older and pre-register at www.moreyspiers.com/zombierun. The price of registration ranges from $41.00 to $91.00 depending on the running category.  Special student and military pricing is available.

This year’s race will also feature Zombie Mud Run Junior, a specialty themed wave starting at 12:30pm for kids 12 and under along with their parents. Juniors must be accompanied by an adult, and can choose to be a Human or a Zombie. Adults can purchase a ticket in the 12:30 waive and participate with the juniors or purchase a spectator ticket and follow alongside next to the course.

Wildwood Crest announces late-season lifeguard coverage schedule

WILDWOOD CREST – The Wildwood Crest Beach Patrol has announced its late-season beach coverage for 2014.

All beaches will be open and protected by beach patrol staff on Labor Day weekend (Aug. 30-Sept. 1) and on the weekend after Labor Day (Sept. 6-7).

Due to limited available staff, nine beaches will be protected from Tuesday, Sept. 2 through Friday, Sept. 5: Lavender, Cardinal, Forget-Me-Not, Primrose, Stockton, Louisville, Denver, Pittsburgh and Washington.

Sunday, Sept. 7 will be the last day of the 2014 season for regular lifeguard coverage of the Wildwood Crest beaches. Response teams will be available for emergency calls on the weekends of Sept. 13-14 and Sept. 20-21.

As always, the Wildwood Crest Beach Patrol strongly urges its beach patrons to swim at lifeguard-protected beaches only.

WILDWOOD – Five long-time city residents brought their memories and their photos to the table Aug. 19 as they reminisced about growing up in Wildwood.

The panel recalled more than a half-century of memories – from the 1962 storm that had children riding down Pacific Avenue in boats that broke free from their berths as part of the African Queen amusement on the Boardwalk, to the days when a nightclub owner turned down the opportunity to have a young singer by the name of Al Martino perform in his club at $85 a week because it would have set him over budget.

The group included Tom Kinnemand, John Fitzgerald, Joe Russo, Isy Finocchiaro DiBiase and Valentino LaNoce, along with Wildwood Mayor Ernie Troiano Jr.

The roundtable discussion was held as part of the city’s commitment to preserving Wildwood’s past via videotapes highlighting the oral histories of long-time residents.

“This is an ongoing history of the city,” said Troiano. “These people are Wildwood treasures and the carriers of our history.  By sharing their memories they are preserving what Wildwood is all about.  We can’t thank them enough for their participation.”

Wildwoods Hydrofest International Powerboat Racing Returns to the Wildwoods, Saturday, September 13 & Sunday, September 14

The Wildwoods, NJ – A weekend of high-speed, pulse-pounding action featuring powerboats reaching speeds up to 140 mph will take place during the Wildwoods Hydrofest on Saturday, September 13 and Sunday, September 14.

This exciting, family-friendly event will be held on Sunset Lake in Wildwood Crest, located at Rambler Road and New Jersey Avenue.

High-speed powerboat races begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 13 and Sunday, September 14. The Wildwoods Hydrofest will also offer a six-block marketplace featuring powerboat racing merchandise and craft and food vendors from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 13 and Sunday, September 14.

The event is FREE for spectators and is handicapped and wheelchair accessible.

Special pit passes are available for $10 and allow pass holders access to the pit area to meet the racers and to get an up-close look at the powerboats.

The Wildwoods Hydrofest comes to town a month early this year due to the high tide schedule – in previous years the event has taken place in October.

The Wildwoods Hydrofest is one of the shore’s most exciting events of the year, featuring hydroplane and flat-bottom race boats taking to the water for a series of high-speed races along the bay at Sunset Lake with boats reaching a gut-wrenching 80 to 140 MPH. Each race is comprised of four laps over a one-mile oval course, presenting a challenge of driving skill and timing for the racers and their sleek, high powered vessels.

The Wildwoods Hydrofest is sanctioned by the American Power Boat Association and the Canadian Boating Federation. This year’s event will feature over 70 powerboat teams from both the United States and Canada competing for national and international honors.

The stakes are even higher at the Wildwoods Hydrofest as the event is home to the New Jersey Governor’s Cup and this year’s Eastern Divisional Championships – two prestigious titles all powerboat racing teams strive to hold.

New this year, the event has joined the EPIC Series – Eastern Pro Inboard Championship Series. The EPIC Series is new for the inboard racing circuit of the American Power Boat Association and the Wildwoods Hydrofest will be part of the action.

EPIC Series is a new progressive points series in addition to the traditional multi-class program. The series adds excitement to the racing program as the best of the best will be competing to win the EPIC Series inaugural crown for their respective racing class.

While online registration for the Tri the Wildwoods Triathlon is now CLOSED, it is not too late to sign up for the 5k and Kid's Race events.

North Wildwood Field to Honor Former Mayor

NORTH WILDWOOD - North Wildwood City Council passed a resolution to change the name of the Eighth Street Field to "Bill Henfey Park," in honor of the former mayor Aug. 5. 

The name change was revealed in a heart-warming announcement during the National Night Out event in North Wildwood, surprising Henfey and most of the attendees.

The announcement included a display of the planned improvements.

Henfey, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but moved to North WIldwood at the age of 22. He became a citizen of the community through his dedication to public safety as a police officer and his service of allegiance as mayor from 2006 - 2013.

In 2013, Mayor Henfey and council began acquiring information on how they might be able to attain Eighth Street Field as a city asset, in order to preserve the land from any sort of development.

Purchase of the field was finalized Dec. 20, 2013 - just before the end of Henfey's term. It is anticipated that county Open Space preservation funds will reimburse the city for the cost of the acquisition.

The Wildwoods, NJ – The City of Wildwood is giving pups another reason to wag their tails this summer with the unveiling of a new art piece at the Wildwoods Dog Beach on Friday, August 15.  An ode to man’s best friend, the 25 feet tall, fire-engine red hydrant art display is a gift to the city from Morey’s Piers & Beachfront Water Parks  in celebration of the Wildwoods’ first-ever, dog dedicated beach.

Constructed from recycled parts of an old Morey’s amusement ride, the public art project was designed and built by architect Rich Stokes and Morey’s Piers’ artBOX resident artists, David Macomber, and the father and son team of Peter J. Bieling and Pete C. Bieling.  A cultivated addition to the Fido-friendly, seaside play area, the 5,000 pound structure is detailed with bones, dog paws and a squirrel perched on top. It also pays special recognition to the Wildwood Fire Department and two volunteer units – HBFD (Holly Beach Fire Dept.) and WFD#1 (Wildwood Fire Dept. #1).

Mayor Ernest Troiano, Commissioners Pete Byron and Anthony Leonetti will lead the unveiling ceremonies starting at 11:00am, joined by Will and Jack Morey, second-generation partners of Morey’s Piers.  The Wildwood Fire Department will be on site with fire apparatus to shoot water sky high in celebration of the unveiling as well as to provide drinking water for all the four-legged guests in attendance.

In a joint statement from both the City of Wildwood and Jack Morey they commented, “This project is a great example of how public and private sectors can work together to advance a great beach resort in a fittingly fun and quirky manner.”

Pet owners attending the event will receive customized souvenir Frisbees along with information on pet-friendly hotel accommodations and events in the area.  For a full list of dog-friendly hotels and events, visit www.wildwoodsnj.com.  The August 15 unveiling celebration will also feature a guest appearance by Wildwoods beloved “Fudgy Wudgy Man” handing out free dog biscuits, and a costume contest for pooches wearing their best “Wildwood pride.”

On June 14, 2014, the City of Wildwood opened its first dog-friendly beach at Poplar Avenue, stretching one city block wide and 1,500 feet long.  Dogs visiting the Wildwoods area are now welcome to join their families on the beach and to swim in the ocean within this designated dog beach area. Fresh water and dog clean-up bags are available and the beach is open every day from 6:00 a.m. until dusk. All dogs must remain on leashes.

Tri/Run the Wildwoods Triathlon and 5K Race Returns Saturday, August 16 on the Beaches in North Wildwood

The Wildwoods, NJ – August 4, 2014 – The 11th Annual Tri/Run the Wildwoods will take place Saturday, August 16 along the beautiful beaches, streets and boardwalk of North Wildwood with hundreds of athletes from across the country participating.

The Triathlon will feature a ¼ mile swim; 10-mile bike race; and a 3.1 mile beach/boardwalk run beginning at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 16. All participants are treated to a catered hot breakfast on the beach.

The event will also include a 5K, or 3.1 mile, beach/boardwalk run, strictly for runners, set to begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, August 16, after the final wave of the triathlon has begun. The swim course and run course will begin at 15th Avenue and the beach in North Wildwood; the bike course will begin at 13th Avenue and JFK Boulevard in North Wildwood.

There is also a Wild Child Splash and Dash beginning at 9 a.m., which incorporates a swim and run course for children ages 6 through 14 and focuses on finishing rather than competing. All children will receive a finisher medal and free T-shirt as well as have access to the Kid’s Fun Zone.

Tri/Run the Wildwoods, a USA Triathlon sanctioned event, first took place in the Wildwoods in August 2004 and has grown to attract more than 500 runners a year from throughout the northeast as well as athletes from as far as Colorado, California, Ireland, Iceland and Canada. Prizes will be awarded to the winners in each age group immediately following the race.

The Wildwoods Fifth Annual Tattoo Expo & Show Brings the Body Art Community to the Wildwoods Convention Center for a Weekend of Events - Friday, August 15th - Sunday, August 17th

The Wildwoods, NJ – August 1, 2014 – The Fifth Annual Wildwood Tattoo Expo and Show, presented by Mike Siderio of locally owned Rebel Image Tattoo, takes place Friday, August 15 through Sunday, August 17 inside the Wildwoods Convention Center – an event perfect for tattoo enthusiasts, as well as those interested in the unique art form of tattooing and body art design.

Hours for the Tattoo Expo and Show are noon - 11 p.m. on Friday, August 15, 11 a.m. - 11 p.m. on Saturday, August 16 and 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. on Sunday, August 17.

The Tattoo Expo and Show will bring the professional body art community to the Wildwoods for a weekend full of events. The event will host major national tattoo artists, as well as activities including tattoo contests, live tattooing, art exhibits and more. The world's strongest man and 8th Wonder of the World, Titano Strongman, will perform strange, bizarre and mind-blowing acts that will amaze, entice and titillate the senses. Titano is a world record-holder, title competitor and theatrical performer specializing in "Feats of Strength" not seen since The Golden Era of Circus Sideshow. Performances will take place at 8 p.m. on Friday, August 15; at 3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 16; and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 17.

Butch Patrick, best known as the iconic television character Eddie Munster, will be attending the event on Friday, August 15 from noon - 11 p.m. and on Saturday, August 16 from 11 a.m. - 11 p.m.

The Ms. Vixen Tattoo Swimsuit Contest, hosted by pinup model Laura Lynn, will take place on Saturday, August 16 at 7 p.m. where the first place winner will receive a photo spread in Rebel Ink Magazine. The entry fee is $10 for ladies 18 years old and over. Second and third place prizes will also be awarded.

Industry legend Philadelphia Eddie will be signing his book series “Tattooing: The Life and Times of Crazy Philadelphia Eddie; My Vida Loca.” He has been a part of the transition of this art form from its early days, first as a social taboo, then subject to prohibition, up until today where tattooing as a legitimate form of self-expression and art. Philadelphia Eddie has had a prolific career as a tattoo artist, fighting for the legitimacy of tattooing as an art form and industry. This is the story of his life and times, and the story of tattooing in America, and what it took for us as a society to get from there to here.
