A few weeks back, we asked for vintage family photos for a new weekly feature and - as usual - our readers did not disappoint. For the first installment of "Monday Memories" I decided to dig into my own family archives for this photo of myself (at 11 months) with my parents in July of 1979.
[Bonus points if you can identify the local Philly brew mom and dad were enjoying here...]
The setting is instantly identifiable, though some things have surely changed in the nearly 31 years since this was taken. In the background, at center, is the Aloha Motel; note the original balconies on the eastern side of the structure (they have since been covered by wall-length windows) and the real palm trees on the sundeck.
Most striking is the absence of the current condos on the corner of 2nd & JFK. Does anyone have any idea when that structure was built?
A small glimpse of the Acropolis Motor Inn is visible at the extreme left.
Each week, we will feature a new "Monday Memories" vintage family photo. If you have a pic you would like to share, please drop us a line and send it along to wildwood365@gmail.com. Include as much info as you would like, including names of those in the photo(s), location, particular vacation memories, etc.
Al, I grew up on the that street. In fact, I vividly remember playing in the lots next to and behind the Aloha Motel (in the background). My parents started our motel business in the Summer of 1979 (Harbor Light Motor Inn, 3rd and Ocean). That year, the construction of the building didn't finish until the end of June, the bridge coming into town burned down, and the interest rate was 18%...how they made it I have no idea! What you don't see in that photo is the non existence of what is now known as the "Irish Riviera" aka the "Inlet Beach." It didn't exist. The water would crash against the rocks at high tide and land in the street! I'll have to dig up some old photos for you. Keep up the great work.
