According to Brian Ianieri of the Press of Atlantic City, the cost of renovations needed to re-open the Beesley's Point Bridge is estimated at $32 million. The figure was reached at today's Cape May County Transportation Infrastructure Conference.
The toll bridge, which runs parallel to the larger Great Egg Harbor Bridge over the Great Egg Harbor River, has been closed since 2004. It connected Atlantic County (at Somers Point) with Cape May County (Upper Township) along Route 9.
CMC freeholders purchased the bridge from the Beesley's Point Bridge Company in December 2008. At the time, the cost of repairs was calculated at $20 million and a target re-opening date of 2012 was set.
Today's re-evaluation, however, has brought those plans into serious question.
