THE WILDWOODS - The Greater Wildwoods Tourism Improvement & Development Authority (GWTIDA) joined state, county, local and city officials, guest speakers and over 300 elementary school children to officially "unlock" the Wildwoods beaches for the summer 2023 season.
The 37th Annual International Kite Festival, the largest Kite Festival in North America, was simultaneously launched over the Wildwoods beaches. Colorful kites served as a backdrop and children of all ages joined in on the fun, launching the kites they made earlier that morning during a children's Kite Making Workshop inside the Wildwoods Convention Center.
The Kite Festival was held throughout the weekend, and wrapped up on Monday, May 27 with the Indoor Kite Competition at the Wildwoods Convention Center.
Immediately following the unlocking, GWTIDA representatives, tourism, state, county, local and city officials, VIP's, Gigi the Tram Car Driver extraordinaire and Floss Stengel - the original voice of the Tram Car's famous "Watch the Tram Car, Please!" announcement - participated in a photo opportunity that celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Sightseer Tram Cars on the Wildwoods Boardwalk.
For three-quarters of a century, the Tram Cars have played a leading role transporting millions of visitors on the Wildwoods Boardwalk. The Tram Cars were first put into service on the Boardwalk in 1949 and remain the heartbeat and the very essence of the Wildwoods. This summer marks the Diamond Jubilee 75th anniversary for the all-electric people movers, as they continue to traverse the Wildwoods Boardwalk, announcing their iconic warning, "Watch the Tram Car, Please!"
