WILDWOOD - It came as an instant thought for Anthony Martino, helping Ukraine is the right thing to do for his Gaiss’ Markets located in the Villas. But how?
After seeing the news that Polish organization Caritas would take in 2,000 children orphans from Ukraine, it clicked. Even a week after Martino’s decision, Caritas has expanded their assistance to tens of thousands of refugees.
Gaiss' Market offers an award winning smoked kielbasa that took first place in the competition of 2015. Today they hold their crown by continuing to sell the best around.
From Wednesday March 9th through Wednesday March 23rd two dollars from every package sale will be donated to Caritas. Caritas Internationalis is a group of over 150 Catholic relief, development and social service organizations working in over 200 countries and territories.
Funds will be donated directly to Caritas Poland through their online donation link, available here for anyone who would like to make a direct donation.
Martino is no stranger to charitable endeavors. Many times through the years Gaiss' Market has supported local organizations with fundraising and donations. However nothing of this scale has been completed by the Market before.
“I guess it’s good and bad to say we’re doing this massive fundraiser,” said Martino. “It’s fantastic we will raise this money, we expect this to be a very successful fundraiser, but of course the reason is terrible. The people in Ukraine really need our help, especially the children.”
Poland, being a neighboring country, has made many commitments to the people of Ukraine along with other neighboring countries. Donating from the sales of Polish smoked Kielbasa brings a connection from the frontlines to the local butcher shop.
Gaiss’ Market’s meat processor’s wife is from Ukraine, her family is stuck in the country. They were unable to evacuate and are currently out of contact due to endless bombings and attack from Russia.
“It’s heartbreaking really,” said Martino. “To think that these terrible things can happen in 2022 with all of the history we have as a world is amazing. The entire Gaiss’ Markets family is praying for Ukraine.”
