Wildwood, North Wildwood mayors shoot down report on beach smoking bans
There are no current plans to ban smoking on the beaches of the Wildwoods.
Wildwood Mayor Ernie Troiano and North Wildwood Mayor Patrick Rosenello have confirmed to Wildwood 365 that a NJ.com report on April 27 contained inaccurate information.
The article in question stated that smoking would be prohibited on Wildwood and North Wildwood beaches this summer.
While this is not the case, a smoking ban on the Boardwalk did go into effect on January 1.
"No, we're not banning smoking on our beach," said Troiano. "That report is false. Maybe there was some confusion with the smoking ban on the Boardwalk, which is now in effect.
"With smoking on the beach, it's a matter of practicality. The biggest issue is, how would we enforce something like that? Given the size of our beaches it's just not possible. We'd have to hire 100 extra people to cover it.
"In a perfect world, everyone would clean up after themselves. That's all we ask. If you come to use our free beaches, please be respectful of nature and the people around you. Pick up after yourself, toss your trash in a receptacle.
"The majority of beach users, I think, are very respectful."
