Former Crest library damaged in storm; future in question

UPDATE - 6:05 pm

Statement from Wildwood Crest Mayor Don Cabrera:

In response to inquiries, YES, all Borough officials are aware of the north facade of the old library coming down. The police department, public works, fire company and administrative team have been involved in securing the area and handling the issue. No reported injuries, but please keep clear of the area.

Thank you for reporting and sharing the concern. We will determine insurance claim details and develop long term and short term plans with respect to this building and lot. The problem appears to have have happened due to the wiring from pole to building tugging on the old brick facade due to the north eastern Riley wind event. More to come...

While the island seems to have gotten through last night's storm relatively unscathed, at least one structure of note incurred significant damage.

The former and presently-unoccupied Wildwood Crest Library (6301 Ocean Avenue) had its north-facing wall blown out.

According to Wildwood Crest Historical Society President Kirk Hastings, a decision now has to be made whether to repair the building or tear it down. There has been talk of the historical society moving into this location, from its current base at Crest Pier Community Center.

Hastings noted that the overall structure appears to be in sound shape, though a thorough inspection awaits.

The building has been vacant for about three years. Its collections were moved to the new Wildwood Crest Library at 6300 Atlantic Avenue, which opened in August 2015.
