Five years ago tonight, Kenny Chesney ROCKED the Wildwoods

June 20, 2012 is a date forever etched into Wildwood history.

Five years ago this evening - as hard as that is to believe - country music megastar Kenny Chesney rocked the island with a beach concert for the ages.

An estimated 30,000 fans packed the sandy stretch between Mariner's Landing and Adventure Pier - the amusements and Boardwalk providing an incredible backdrop as the show began at sundown.

6/20/12 - What a night!
The concert production, billed as "American Express UNSTAGED," was a 90-minute extravaganza broadcast live on YouTube and directed by Academy Award winner Jonathan Demme.

The event served as a vehicle for the release of Chesney's album "Welcome to the Fishbowl," and was widely praised, after coming together in just under 3 1/2 weeks.

Above all, the concert was a spectacular showcase for the Wildwoods, confirming its ability to host a major scale event in a totally unique, world class setting.

Two years later, in late 2014, Chesney had nothing but glowing words about his experience that night.

"The Wildwood, New Jersey show a couple years ago was the most [surprising show of my career]. It surprised me a lot," said in an intervie with ABC Radio News. The connection we had with the audience was unbelievable.

"I loved playing out there in Wildwood that night!"
