An ordinance passed by City Commissioners several years ago allows equestrians to ride along Wildwood’s wide, sandy beach during the off season.
“Horseback riding on the beach is a great way to experience Wildwood,” said Commissioner Pete Byron. Byron, who oversees the city’s Department of Beach Services, is a strong advocate of utilizing the beach year-round. “Riding a horse on the sand allows a unique perspective of the ocean and the beach.”
According to the commissioner, an ordinance passed in 2011 allows horseback riding along the shoreline from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 1 through April 30. A season-long permit is available in the City Clerk’s Office and costs $50.
“Unlike other beach resorts that allow horseback riding, the width of our beach is a huge incentive to saddle up and come to Wildwood,” Byron noted. “We have ample room.”
The ordinance limits the number of horses on the beach to 20 per day and riders are required to wear protective headgear.

“Rider safety is paramount to us,” Byron noted. Riders 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult. The commissioner added that trailers transporting the horses must be parked at the Cresse Avenue entrance to the beach.
Horseback riding in years gone by was a constant sight on Wildwood’s beach, the commissioner said.
“We want the City of Wildwood to continue to be one of America’s most family-friendly beach resort areas. Horseback riding on the beach is just another way Wildwood says ‘Welcome.’”
