Sand Castle Motel washes out to sea (*not literally)

A decade after the "condo boom" saw the destruction of dozens of mid-century treasures in the Wildwoods, another staple has met the wrecking ball.

*Sigh*

The Sand Castle Motel at 7400 Ocean Avenue in the Crest has met its fate, with a demolition crew finishing off the structure over the weekend.

The motel was best known for its unique C-shaped design and is one of a diminishing number of two-story 'motor inns' in the island's southern third.

The Sand Castle also housed its own restaurant, and was the home of Gia Ristorante for the past few years. Gia moved back to 3001 Pacific Avenue in Wildwood last month.

We're still trying to pinpoint the building date, but do know that it was there before the neighboring Tahiti Motel debuted in 1963. The Tahiti was razed in late 2004.

As for what will replace the motel... look for the exciting construction of a 12-unit condo building soon.

For what it's worth, the Sand Castle's former website, www.sandcastlemotel.info, now redirects to the official website of the Oceanic Motel in Wildwood.
