New dramedy "Wildwood" coming to FOX?

Back in October, Deadline: Hollywood TV reporter Nellie Andreeva reported that Fox had purchased the rights to Wildwood, a one-hour show to be produced by Shonda Rhimes and written by Diane Ruggiero (Cupid, The Ex List).

Set in Wildwood in 1985, the "coming-of-age dramedy" centers on a teenage girl who lies about her age to land a job at a popular bar. She faces a variety of challenges over the course of one summer, dealing with her chaotic Irish-Italian family and romance, while leading a secret life at work.

The show is reportedly being produced by ABC Studios and Shondaland, with Rhimes, Ruggerio, and Betsy Beers executive producing.

We haven't heard much about the status of the project since then, but have been in touch with reps from Fox and hope to have an update very soon.

Obviously, this is exciting news for any Wildwood enthusiast. There remain so many unanswered questions, however...

In addition to when the show will debut, just how the town will be portrayed (especially in a 1980s setting), and whether real or ficticious landmarks will be represented are just some of our primary curiosities.

What are some of your thoughts on the concept, and/or some of the questions you have?

We'll do our best to get the answers soon. Stay tuned!

  2. If they don't do it right they better not do it at all!!! After Jersey Shore, they better get the representation of Wildwood right!

  3. Being a teenage girl in the 80's that worked in Wildwood, I'm very curious! I hope they do it right, if so I will be their biggest fan!!!

  4. How do they expect to do this when the landscape has changed so much (for the negative) in Wildwood. Alot of the Landmarks are gone! Wildwood just isn't close to what it was in 1985. I spent many of my summers doing the same as the storyline, definitely the best days of my life!

  5. I've never heard of 'the shore' movie. What year was it filmed??

  6. I think it's a great idea as long as (just like the post above) they represent Wildwood in the right way, not like that trashy Jersey shore show. But I'd be excited to see the first episode :)

  7. Great Opportunity for the Wildwoods. Hope it is done this year.

  8. Wildwood sucks. There are too many a-holes down there in the summer and nothing to do in the winter if you live there year-round.

  9. I agree with Anonymous....getting it right is going to be very important....I wouldn't want it to turn my beloved Wildwood into a laughing stock...

  10. The Wildwood of the 1980's is LONG GONE. How they're going to capture a true depiction of that time is beyond me. I think it would come off weak, with a boatload of fictional places. The boardwalk is totally different, the best restuarants are gone. I'd call it "Condo" not "Wildwood". All the things that made Wildwood a family place to Summer are ancient history.

  12. I can't wait for this show! I do agree it has changed so much. My grandparents' house where I used to stay in the 80s and 90s is gone with a condo in it's place. A lot of memories of Wildwood. I'm curious to see what they make of it.

  13. I don't know a person who LOVES North Wildwood, NJ more than my Great friend, Kathy. She spent every summer there from the time she was a child. She lived on 18th street. Her and her cousins had the greatest, happiest childhood memories here. As a teen, she continued to go to the shore, however, now she was with her friends going to bars like the Manor Bar, Shramrock..just to name a couple. Then there was good old Senior Week..a Philadelphia, Delaware County tradition. Great times. Now as an adult, she continues the tradition with her own children and now Happily owns her little slice of heaven on 15th and often walks by her grandparents house, the Canal, the boardwalk...and SMILES. Best times of her young life were had in North Wildwood and continue to this day. Thank you for making my friends life complete.

  15. As a friend of mine who sent me the link to this story so aptly put it, "We owned that town in 1985". I spent four summers in Wildwood from 1983-1987. Who could forget beat the clock at the Fairview with Bobby Binns, then after hours at Maggie Mays, 25 cent beers at the Martinique, the bands at the Oasis or fish bowl nights at Gilligan’s, as well as Comedy at the Club Casaba. Wildwood was certainly an experience in the middle to late 80’s that can never be duplicated.

  17. it will be interesting to see how they portray the 80's landscape now that it has changed so much. Here's just a few things that have changed:

Hunt's Pier, Sportland Pier, Ed Zaberers, Cozy Morley's Club Avalon, The Red Garter, Moore's, Harry The Hats, Colson's Lumber Yard, The Wildwood Train Station, London Ale House, Penalty Box, Oasis and Oasis II, Fairview, Razzles, Rainbow, Quart Room, Quo Vadis, The Movie Theaters on the Boardwalk,

  18. Don't forget the Quartroom with Jasper and Radio City. And Uries with Toma Leah and the Polynesian review.

  19. I am sooo very excited!! I was a bartender in the 80s down Wildwood, spent 9 summers down there. Kinda sounds like my life lol.

  20. I was there. 1985 was the best summer of my life! I hope the show is as good as my many summers in the "woods"!

  22. I grew up in Wildwood! My parents were business owners. 2 years ago was my first year back in 12 years and boy did it change. The boardwalk didnt change for the most part, But the streets and the clubs and realism of life has changed too many Condos. How would they get rid of them and bring back the real businesses that got bought out by these condos? I will watch it for sure definately to see how they replace everything.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Of course they will screw it up, what do you expect, it's Hollywood !!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Please no. They already messed up the shore enough. I don't want Wildwood to get screwed over, too.

  25. I am available for consultation....I lived in Wildwood as a teen in the 80s! I have lots of stories and photos! : )
