Will Asbury Park lose its top?

And, if so, would other Jersey Shore towns, um, follow (birthday) suit?

(Too many potential bad puns, too little time. But, hey, this is a nice, breezy little topic for a lazy Saturday morning...)

So, up in Asbury, they are considering designating a section of beach where woman can go topless. (Press of Atlantic City)

Certainly not a unique concept. The difference, unlike other nude or "clothing optional" beaches in New Jersey, is that any sandy stretch of real estate up for consideration would easily be within view of the Boardwalk.

The driving force behind the idea is Reggie Flimlin, a 48-year-old yoga instructor who feels that women should have the right to chose to sunbath without a bikini top. In broader terms, she views this as an opportunity for Asbury to make a progressive statement.

The town's plights have been well-documented. One of New Jersey's premier resort destinations during the first half of the 20th Century, Asbury fell on hard times. After decades of blight and struggle, however, a renaissance of sorts has been realized, bolstered by a diverse community uprising.

But, are semi-nude beaches a logical next step?

The matter will be discussed at a town meeting on July 7th.
