“This year and, hopefully, every year after. A pickle takeover, that’s the plan,” said Jae Romm, the intrepid owner of Northeast Philadelphia-based Rommadill Pickling Company.
This Spring, Romm will open his first physical location, the Rommadill Pickling Store, at 3109 Pacific Avenue in Downtown Wildwood.
The store, which will focus on takeout service with limited counter seating, will offer a variety of homemade, flavored pickles and pickle-related items, from pickle sandwiches (exactly what it sounds like, with sliced pickles instead of bread) to stuffed pickles and pickle chips with various toppings.
“We’re so much more than just pickles, with a focus on pickle-related products and creations,” Romm explained. “Our menu will reflect the different tastes we offer with a variety of specialties. I can promise something different, and a little something for everyone.
“Just wait until you see some items we’ll be selling. Wildwood has never seen anything like this before. That’s our goal, to bring something new and unique to the table.”
To illustrate, Romm previewed the “Heartbreaker,” a double-decker pickle sandwich with ham, buffalo chicken, letter, cooper cheese and a special sauce; then there’s the “Betty Boop” - cheesecake-topped pickle halves with strawberries and Hershey Syrup!
Rommadill’s signature homemade pickles will be available in various-sized jars and containers (with flavors like Old Bay, sweet horseradish and bread & butter), along with a selection of sauces and condiments, and “a whole lot more.”
Romm, who previously apprenticed with another pickling company, founded his own business last July. His desire to expand both his operation and his creative horizons quickly led him to Wildwood.
“I grew up here. Both my grandmom and my aunt lived in Wildwood Crest,” he explained. “I had summer jobs at Bobby Dee’s Arcade and Duffer’s Ice Cream. I know this place, I love it. It’s the ideal place for me to open my first store and start a new tradition with my family.
“One day soon, pickle-on-a-stick is gonna be right up there with funnel cake and fried Oreo’s, and other treats that you think of when you think of the shore and the Boardwalk. It all starts here!”
While an opening date for the Rommadill Pickling Store has not been set, Romm is aiming for a soft opening around Easter Weekend, followed by a grand opening celebration.
