Tram Cars to run after MDW, with new protocols in place

Slowly, but surely, we’re beginning to get a sense of what Summer 2020 in the Wildwoods is going to look like.

Late last week, several restrictions on access to the Boardwalk and beaches were lifted, and more “essential” businesses opened for takeout and delivery services.

The majority of Boardwalk shops remain in limbo, however, pending Governor Phil Murphy’s decision on when to allow retail stores, restaurant dining rooms, etc. to reopen.

Another very noticeable absense has prompting the much-asked question:

Will we hear “Watch the Tram Car, Please” on the Boardwalk this summer?

The answer is YES, but details surrounding the implementation of new protocols for the famous Sightseer Tram Cars are still being finalized.

“We are looking to restart the Tram Cars on Tuesday, May 26 with some common sense, innovative mitigation protocols in place,” said Patrick Rosenello, Executive Director of the Boardwalk SID, and also Mayor of North Wildwood.

“These measures will preserve the authentic nature of the Tram Cars while also providing significantly-enhanced safety measures for customers and staff.”

Perhaps the Wildwoods’ most iconic and enduring icon, the Sightseer trams celebrated their 71st summer of operation on the Boardwalk in 2019.

Service generally begins in April or early May, but has been delayed due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.
