Morey's Piers' Partnership with Wildwood High School Helps Jump Start College and Career Readiness

PRESS RELEASE

Fifteen high school students tested the waters for a potential career in the amusement industry last week during a hands-on day of learning at Raging Waters Water Park. Wednesday’s workshop was part of an ongoing series in Morey’s Piers partnership with Wildwood High School to prepare students for college and careers by introducing them to new opportunities.

Students’ onsite learning experiences last year included tours with a focus on the areas of attractions and facility maintenance, electrical engineering and construction, as well as finance and marketing.

Wednesday’s curriculum focused on Aquatic Safety and Water Park Operations and included participation in the actual swim test candidates must pass as part of the Morey’s Piers lifeguard training program.  The students, mostly seniors with a few juniors and sophomores, learned how Morey’s Piers trains and certifies 200 lifeguards.

To emphasize Morey’s Piers’ commitment to the safety of its guests, the participants had the opportunity to get in the water and practice some basic rescue and lifesaving techniques, as well as understand the importance of effective scanning to prevent injuries or drowning.

Students received a behind-the-scenes tour of the pump rooms to see how water quality is monitored and maintained to operate a safe and clean water park.

After the up-close view of the operations guided by the park’s experienced technicians and the hands-on training experience, the students ended their session with a networking lunch with the staff.

Wildwood High School Senior George Lewis expressed his appreciation for the chance to explore a career possibility in an authentic environment with experienced professionals.

"It was really a great day with the staff,” Lewis said.  “They were very encouraging and informative, made me feel a part of the team."

Morey’s Piers 2nd Generation Partner Jack Morey said the organization wants to help students explore what interests them and better understand their options.

“As neighbors in the community, we’re thrilled to be in a position to share our facilities, programs and team members with the students of Wildwood High School, giving them real-world insights to help make decisions about their future career paths.”

Morey’s Piers and school officials have identified Food and Beverage/Culinary Arts and Hospitality & Hotel Operations as the next two areas of focus for upcoming workshops scheduler the fall.
