Doo Wop Wednesday: Saratoga Inn

The mid-century era motels of the Wildwoods come in many sizes and shapes, and boast a wide range of themes. Many take their cues from music or pop culture references of the 50s and 60s, while others pay tribute to far away, often-exotic locales.

The Saratoga Inn (7501 Ocean Avenue) is unique in that it honors the spirit of the American Revolution, taking its name from the famous battles that took place in upstate New York during the Fall of 1777.

Along with the nearby Carriage Stop condos, the Saratoga stands as one of the Wildwoods' prime examples of what the Doo Wop Preservation League categorizes as "Phoney Colonee" architecture.

Built in 1960, the Saratoga is entering its 51st season of operation. The motel has changed very little physically over the years, still most notable for its pitched roof, red brick veneer, and decorative cupolas, among other appropriate stylings that echo the Colonial era.

The Saratoga is this week's subject of the "Doo Wop Discussion" on the DWPL message board. Click HERE for the direct link to join in!
