Volvo Cars helps preserve and modernize an iconic Jersey Shore experience

PRESS RELEASE

WILDWOOD, NJ - The Wildwoods Boardwalk Sightseer Tram Cars, one of the most recognizable and beloved features of the Jersey Shore, are entering a new chapter in a shared initiative with Volve Cars aimed at preserving and modernizing this historic transportation experience for future generations.

Owned and operated by the non-profit Wildwoods Boardwalk Special Improvement District Management Corporation (WSID), the Sightseer Tram Cars represent a rare example of a fully self-sustaining public transportation system. The operation receives no government funding and serves hundreds of thousands of visitors each year through its independent, mission-driven model.

This new initiative represents a significant step forward in maintaining the integrity of the Tram Car experience while embracing modern technology. As part of the first phase, Volvo Cars will provide three fully electric EX40 vehicles, aligning with the original electric-powered design of the historic tram cars. This transition underscores a commitment to sustainability while honoring the system's roots.

The new vehicles will retain the unmistakable character of the Tram Cars - including the beloved original recorded announcements that generations of visitors instantly recognize - while adding advanced safety features such as speed regulators and a 360-degree camera system.

For decades, the WSID has worked diligently to preserve the Tram Car operation amid rising costs, infrastructure challenges, and evolving transportation demands. After evaluating numerous options, the initiative with Volvo Cars emerged as the most effective solution - one that balances heritage, safety, sustainability, and long-term viability.

"The Sightseer Tram Cars are more than transportation - they are part of the identity of the Wildwoods," said WSID Executive Director Patrick Rosenello. "This initiative with one of the world's premier automobile manufacturers allows us to honor that legacy while ensuring the system remains safe, reliable and relevant for years to come."

"At Volvo Cars, our approach to innovation is rooted in safety, sustainability and respect for the communities we serve," said Jim Nichols, Vice President and Head of Product, Technology and Consumer Offer, Volvo Cars America. "The Sightseer Tram Cars are a cherished part of the Jersey Shore experience. While Volvo Cars is based in Sweden, New Jersey has been our American home for over 70 years.

"We are proud to help preserve such an important part of New Jersey culture with a modernized, fully electric technology that preserves the Tram Car character while enhancing safety and reliability for future generations."

The introduction of the all-electric Volvo EX40 Tram Cars marks the beginning of a broader effort to secure the future of the Tram Car program while maintaining the charm and tradition that have made it an enduring symbol of the Wildwoods.
