“GrYnch” run features biggest turnout yet as toy drive hits the home stretch

On a sunny, mild Saturday morning that felt more like April 9 than December 9, over 200 athletes and holiday helpers gathered in front of the Wildwoods Convention Center to reaffirm the “power of community.”

The phrase is the mantra of John Lynch, creator and organizer of the annual Lynch Who Stole Christmas from the Grynch Toy Drive, which, since 2010, has assured that over 9,500 local children have had a gift to unwrap on Christmas morning.

According to Lynch, this year’s Pinch the Grynch 5K & 1 Mile Family Walk was the most successful to date, setting records for turnout and donations. The event, traditionally held on the second Sunday of December, is a focal point of the toy drive.

“We had 216 participants this year, which is just phenomenal,” said Lynch. “That’s our largest attendance to date. We also had 25 volunteers, plus participation and help from the Wildwood Police Department, Wildwood Fire Department and Wildwood Crest Police Department.

“Most importantly, we raised about $5,000 that will go to buy toys that will be delivered on Christmas Eve, and also collected about 200 toys!"

This year’s 5K was modified due to the ongoing Boardwalk Renovation Project. Runners started north along the boards to Garfield Avenue, then turned south, back past the convention center, off the promenade and all the way down to Rambler Road in the Crest, before turning around again and heading back to the starting point.

The race was timed and produced by DelMoSports, in coordination with the Wildwood Police Department. Afterward, prizes were awarded for the top finishers in several age categories.

And, yes, the GrYnch was once again “pinched” after trying to make off with several award medals (though, he was immediately released after the crowd asked for leniency). 

“Personally, I would like to thank anyone and everyone that was a part of our event and those who support our toy drive throughout the month of December,” said Lynch. “The Wildwoods are an incredible place to call home and we’re so appreciative of our volunteers and locals alike.
