Wildwood Catholic senior is Crest's semifinalist for LOM scholarship

PRESS RELEASE

WILDWOOD CREST - Wildwood Catholic Academy senior Carly Murphy has been selected as a semifinalist representing the Borough of Wildwood Crest in the Louis Bay II Future Municipal Leaders Scholarship Competition sponsored by the New Jersey League of Municipalities.

Murphy is set to attend Swarthmore College (Pa.) in the fall.

Participants in the scholarship contest were required to submit an application along with an essay on the theme of “What My Municipal Government Does Best.” One semifinalist is selected from each participating municipality.

As a semifinalist, Murphy is a candidate to become one of the state’s 15 finalists. Three winners will eventually be selected from among the finalists in early May by the New Jersey League of Municipalities scholarship committee. The three winners will each receive a $1,000 scholarship and have their essays published in New Jersey Municipalities magazine.

Murphy was one of four Wildwood Crest residents to submit an application and essay for the scholarship contest.

“We congratulate Carly on representing Wildwood Crest as a semifinalist in this scholarship competition and we wish her the best of luck as the contest moves forward,” Wildwood Crest Mayor Don Cabrera said. “We also thank the other high school students for participating in the contest. I know our judging committee was very impressed with all of the submissions.”

Murphy is a member of the National Honor Society at Wildwood Catholic Academy, is the secretary of the executive board of the school’s student government and has participated in the school’s Mental Health Club.

In addition, Murphy has excelled in basketball and soccer at Wildwood Catholic. In basketball, Murphy was second on the team in points per game at 11.0 and in rebounds per game at 6.8 and led the team in total steals with 50. She helped the Crusaders to a 24-6 record and a berth in the South Jersey championship game for the second straight season.
In soccer, Murphy led Wildwood Catholic with nine goals in 14 games.

A lifelong resident of Wildwood Crest, Murphy, 18, is leaning toward studying political science at Swarthmore College, where she also plans to play for the school’s women’s basketball team. In addition to Swarthmore, Murphy was accepted at both Villanova University and Lafayette University.
