WILDWOOD CREST - Sustainable Jersey representatives announced that the Borough of Wildwood Crest has met the rigorous requirements to achieve Sustainable Jersey certification at the bronze level, while also being named the Sustainable Rookie of the Year.
Wildwood Crest is one of 81 municipalities that have attained certification in 2022. The certified towns were announced at the Sustainable Jersey Annual Luncheon held at last month's New Jersey State League of Municipalities Conference in Atlantic City.
Wildwood Crest's Green Team, an all-volunteer committee of residents tasked with developing plans, implemented programs and assisting with educational opportunities that support the creation of a sustainable community through effective governmental practice, spearheaded Wildwood Crest's efforts in achieving Sustainable Jersey certification.
"Creating a sustainable community is a massive priority here in Wildwood Crest," said Wildwood Crest Mayor Don Cabrera. "The members of our Green Team, along with all of the borough department heads and staff, did a tremendous job in meeting the requirements to receive this certification from Sustainable Jersey.
"But while we are proud to earn bronze level certification and receive Sustainable Jersey's Rookie of the Year award, the borough is fully aware that our efforts toward creating and maintaining a sustainable community must constantly continue to evolve."
To become Sustainable Jersey certified, Wildwood Crest submitted documentation to show it had completed a balance of the required sustainability actions, meeting a minimum of 150 action points. In addition to reaching 150 points, each certified community had to create a Green Team and select at least two out of 14 priority options.
Wildwood Crest, which established it's Green Team in 2018, completed requirements for energy tracking and prescription drug safety and disposal and is also working toward fulfilling other priority action measures.
Sustainable Jersey's Rookie of the Year Award recognizes a newly certified municipality that effectively leveraged a wide range of resources to achieve success in Sustainable Jersey.
"The Sustainable Jersey certified municipalities demonstrate sustainability excellence. The annual awards event is a celebration of their accomplishments," said Randall Solomon, director of Sustainable Jersey. "As New Jersey faces issues such as the climate crisis, a growing equity divide and environmental pollution, the certified towns exemplify the commitment we need to accelerate the transition to a sustainable New Jersey."
Certified towns excelled in areas such as improving energy efficiency, health and wellness, reducing waste, sustaining local economies, protecting natural resources and advancing the arts.
Sustainable Jersey's participating communities represent more than 82 percent of the state's municipalities.
