Wildwood Crest - The Borough of Wildwood Crest has announced the promotion of Captain Robert T. Lloyd to the rank of Police of Chief.
Lloyd's promotion was made official via the unanimous passage of a resolution by the Wildwood Crest Board of Commissioners at its regular bimonthly meeting on Wednesday, November 18.
With his wife and two young daughters at his side, Lloyd was sworn into the position by Wildwood Crest Commissioner of Public Safety immediately after the passage of the resolution.
"I'm extremely grateful to Mayor (Don) Cabrera, Commissioner Thompson and Commissioner (Joyce) Gould for allowing me to take this next step," Lloyd said. "I'm truly humbled and honored to be chief of the Wildwood Crest Police Department."
A full-time police officer in Wildwood Crest since August 2004, Lloyd quickly rose through the ranks and was eventually promoted to captain in October 2016. He then became Officer in Charge of the Wildwood Crest Police Department on January 1 of this year after the retirement of then-Chief Joseph McGrath.
Llyod was heavily involved in the planning and execution of security details surrounding President Donald Trump's visit to the Wildwoods in February and has also overseen all department operations during the current health crisis.
"This is a great move for Wildwood Crest and its residents, appointing a fine leader to our fine police department," Thompson said. "The chief has done a fabulous job so far as Officer in Charge. It was a baptism by fire for him, with the visit by President Trump and then everything associated with the virus. He has done a very good job handling all of it. This appointment puts our police department in a better position moving forward by setting up the proper chain of command with an outstanding leader at the very top."
A lifelong resident of Cape May County, Lloyd began his career in law enforcement as a Class II police officer in Avalon, where he served during the summer of 2002. He was first hired by Wildwood Crest as a full-time Class II officer in February 2003. He was later hired as a full-time police officer in Wildwood Crest in August 2004.
Lloyd was assigned to the department's detective division in 2009 and was eventually promoted to sergeant in May 2011. He was promoted to lieutenant in May 2015 before his promotion to captain the following year.
Lloyd also previously served as a member of the Cape May County SWAT team for nine years and is currently an instructor in physical fitness, firearms training and survival training at the Cape May County Police Academy.
Lloyd is a graduate of Middle Township High School and holds an associate degree in criminal justice from Atlantic Cape Community College. He is a graduate of both the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Seminar and the 277th session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA.
Lloyd's appointment to police chief is provisional in accordance with the terms of his agreement.
