Wildwood historical museum debuts virtual 3D tour

When museums around the world were forced to shutter due to the COVID-19 crisis, many turned to technology to keep their would-be visitors engaged.

An added bonus of the explosion of  “virtual tours” has allowed “virtual guests” from, well, “virtually anywhere” to view collections they would otherwise have no access to.

This morning, the George F. Boyer Museum, home to the Wildwoods Historical Society, announced the launch of a new 3D tour feature via Google Maps.

Users can also type in the museum’s address (3907 Pacific Avenue) and click on the “360 view” option to access the high-definition tour.

Guests are encouraged to interact with staff and ask questions about the many artifacts and curiosities on display, through social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) or email - wildwoodhistoricalsociety@hotmail.com.

“The 3D tour was done a few weeks back by Bill Banks of 360YourSpace.com,” said Wildwood Historical Society President Taylor Henry. “He did it for us because he loves to visit and preserve historical sites.

“We are thrilled that people can now ‘visit’ the museum 24/7/365 because we are considered a non-essential business and therefore not allowed to open yet. We hope the 3D tour makes people very happy!”

The museum was set to open the first weekend in April, before it was forced to close indefinitely due to the pandemic. With the inability to welcome guests and collect in-person donations, the staff continues to seek out creative solutions.

“In addition to the 3D tour, our online store is doing really well,” said Henry. “Our laser engraved Boardwalk pieces are really popular and have even brought interest to the rest of our selection. The funds raised through our online store are helping us stay afloat during these times.”

Laser engraved pieces of authentic Boardwalk wood sell for $30 each, and feature a variety of landmarks and scenes from the Wildwoods’ colorful history. Genuine pieces without laser engraved images sell for $14.99.

Both are available at limited quantities, along with other items, at:

They will also be available at the museum’s gift shop, once Governor Phil Murphy gives the ‘okay’ for reopening.

“Our hope is for a condensed season and more midweek business,” said Henry. “If the season doesn’t get started until mid-June, we hope it won’t result in lost business. Rather, we hope those who had vacation plans before mid-June will reschedule for later in the summer and we will still get to see all of our favorite customers.

“We believe the Wildwoods WILL be prepared for a condensed season and we hope our visitors will be flexible and willing to come whenever the state is ready.”
