The long-anticipated reconstruction of Wildwood's entrance boulevard, which will include a dynamic gateway onto the island, is expected to be completed by Memorial Day Weekend.
The project was further outlined in a public letter this morning, co-signed by Mayor Pete Byron and Tom Byrne, Chairman of the Board, Greater Wildwoods Tourism Improvement & Development Authority (GWTIDA).
As the letter details, the project was primarily conceived as a means to improve flood mitigation and traffic flow, but the road improvements provided an opportunity to implement the new gateway, which will connect the George Redding Bridge to the famous Wildwoods Sign.
While general details of the project, including renderings, have been available publicly for some time, the letter added an unexpected extra:
With construction nearing completion, the city is looking to re-name Rio Grande Avenue!
Included is a five-question survey, asking for the public's thoughts on the matter (with those taking part having a chance to win a Wildwood prize package).
"We believe the improvements lend themselves to renaming the new gateway into our island," the letter states. "While the current name Rio Grande Ave. (Rt. 47) has been in place for a long time, it's hardly a name that represents the entryway to one of the greatest seaside towns in the world.
"We're asking residents, second homeowners and vacationers of the Wildwoods to weigh in. Your feedback and suggestions are important to us and this survey will help guide us in the decision-making process."
