PRESS RELEASE
The Borough of Wildwood Crest will kick off its new Adopt-A-Beach program at the first of the two annual Clean Ocean Action Beach Sweep events scheduled for Saturday, April 30 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The Wildwood Crest Adopt-A-Beach program consists of non-profit organizations or volunteer groups adopting one of the borough's 42 beach street ends at the entrance to the beach, from the bike path to the high tide water line, for the purpose of litter abatement.
Those registered are required to conduct litter pickup a minimum of four times per year, with two cleanups occurring between January and April and two cleanups occurring between September and December each year.
The Wildwood Crest Department of Public Works will arrange for the recycling and/or disposal of all collected litter. The department will provide sufficient supplies for groups that register for the Adopt-A-Beach program.
Supplies include but are not limited to gloves, trash bags and safety supplies. Those registered for the Adopt-A-Beach program will be required to take part in a safety orientation session to review safety issues and proper equipment usage.
Adopt-A-Beach and Beach Sweep volunteers should gather at Centennial Park at 9 a.m. Staff members from the Wildwood Crest Department of Public Works will be on hand to explain the requirements and guidelines of the Adopt-A-Beach program, as well as all pertinent information about the Clean Ocean Action Beach Sweep.
As part of the Beach Sweep events, volunteers will collect, remove and record valuable data about debris, which is presented in annual reports and used to advance federal, state and local programs to reduce litter on New Jersey's beaches and its waterways.
This Beach Sweep and the continuing efforts of the Adopt-A-Beach program will be extremely helpful to the borough's already intensive efforts to keep its vast expanse of beaches clean.
Volunteers should bring gloves and wear weather-appropriate clothing. The event will be held rain or shine.
Call the Wildwood Crest Department of Public Works at 609-522-7446 for registration information.
