With a new season right around the corner, this time of year is usually filled with curiosity and excitement as new stores, restaurants and attractions pop up in the Wildwoods.
Unfortunately, there are also cases of the opposite - news of businesses that won't be returning, demolitions of older structures, favorite haunts fading into history.
Such is the case with Coconut Cove, the sprawling complex that opened on the former site of the legendary Zaberer's Restaurant just five Springs ago. Given its prime location on North Wildwood's Spruce Avenue entrance boulevard and situation on the bay, this entry held great promise and potential to become one of the "hot spots" at the Jersey Shore.
It was, however, not meant to be.
Coconut Cove is meeting its fate with the wrecking ball as we type this, which shouldn't come as a surprise. The property sold some months back, and a heavily-advertised liquidation sale in November stripped the interior of every last fixture.
The site is rumored to become home to a new condo development - something we must point out hasn't been confirmed yet.
Even though it had only been in existence for half a decade (and was fully operational for just three of those five years), it will be strange for many to see "The Cove" missing as they head into North Wildwood this year.
With the also-recently departed, but long-abandoned Lampost Diner and the Flag Shop (which disappeared quietly last year) gone, the view sure is changing.
