WILDWOOD – Get out your leisure suit, Qiana dress and platform shoes. Disco, along with rhythm and blues, are coming to the Wildwoods Convention Center Apr. 25.
The City of Wildwood is hosting a 70s Dance Party and Concert that features a lineup of talent that will have everyone out of their seats and onto the dance floor.
“We have an impressive list of performers taking the stage,” said Mayor Ernie Troiano. “Tavares, Evelyn Champagne King, MFSB, The Ritchie Family, Denise Montana and Purple Reign will all be here.”
Tavares, whose career has spanned more than 50 years, shot to fame in 1975 and 1976 with their hits “Heaven Must Be Missing and Angel” and “It Only Takes a Minute.”
Originally from Philadelphia, The Ritchie Family’s number one disco hits include “Brazil,” “The Best Disco in Town,” “African Queens” and “Quiet Village.”
Evelyn “Champagne” King’s song, “Shame” spent 23 weeks on the Billboard chart in 1978 as both a disco and rhythm and blues song. In 2004 it was one of the first records inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame.
Another Philadelphia-based act, MFSB, recorded The Sound of Philadelphia, or TSOP, in 1972. The music became the theme of the popular television show, “Soul Train.” Released as a single in 1974, the song rose to number one on the Billboard rhythm and blues and pop charts. Some sources refer to TSOP as influencing the establishment of disco music.
“The talent we’ve lined up is some of the best of the 1970s,” said Troiano. “It will be a great evening for people who experienced the music of the 70s as well as those who appreciate great dance music.”
Reserved seating for the Apr. 25 event is $30 for bleacher and floor, or $40 for VIP seating (first five rows).
