Special Olympics Polar Bear Plunge again smashes donation, participation records

The Special Olympics New Jersey (SONJ) has undoubtedly become the Wildwoods' grandest - and most colorful - winter event.

And it keeps getting bigger... and BIGGER!

The 9th annual outing, held this afternoon behind the Wildwoods Convention Center, smashed last year's record-setting event totals.

For the first time, over 1,000 polar bears braved 40-degree conditions and took the plunge into the frigid Atlantic; the official tally saw 1,042 take part, up from approximately 900 last year.

Most importantly, the event raised over $325,000 for SONJ, easily topping (and almost doubling) 2014's total of $188,115.

That figure will continue to grow (and you can help!) as donations will be accepted for the next 60 days at www.njpolarplung.org.
