NORTH CAPE MAY - Today, Cape May – Lewes Ferry officials announced that David B. Macomber, Sr. of North Cape May, New Jersey, was promoted to the rank of Captain effective Jan. 25, 2015. Captain Macomber reports to Port Captain Stan Hansen.
“I’m honored that the Delaware River and Bay Authority selected me to serve as Captain at the Cape May – Lewes Ferry,” said David B. Macomber, Sr. who was hired as an Able-bodied Seaman at the Ferry in 1990. “I’m at home on the water and I take pride in providing the best possible service for our customers and leading by example. It’s a tremendous opportunity and I couldn’t ask for a better job!
Prior to joining the Cape May – Lewes Ferry, Macomber worked in the area’s commercial fishing industry for nearly fourteen years. During this time period, he served as a captain on multiple fishing vessels. Macomber joined the Cape May – Lewes Ferry operation in 1990 and was promoted to permanent Mate eight years later. He attained the rank of Pilot in 2004.
“Captains are the central figures in the maritime industry and the crew is a reflection of their leadership,” said Victor Ferzetti, Acting Chief Operations Officer of the Authority. “Our Captains are more than vessel operators. They set the tone of the operation, mentor crew members, and are responsible for providing our customers a quality experience every day. Dave was selected because he can meet the challenge.”
“Dave is a well-respected marine professional who knows the Delaware Bay inside and out,” remarked Stan Hansen, Port Captain for the Cape May – Lewes Ferry. “He is a proven, successful leader who possesses outstanding ship handling and navigational talents as well as strong interpersonal skills. Dave’s a credit to the maritime profession and we’re fortunate to have him as part of our team.”
As the manager and leader of a marine operations crew, the Captain has full responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of the vessel and the safety of passengers and crew. He is also responsible for compliance with all regulations applicable to the interstate marine transportation of vehicles and passengers. Captain Macomber possesses a United States Coast Guard Inland Masters License of unlimited tonnage and has obtained certification in bridge resource management, welding, and advance firefighting.
